Dolphins vs Roosters: top-end clash with a strange backdrop
With State of Origin wrapped up just a few days earlier, the NRL has only one fixture on Friday night. It’s a lone game on the card, but there’s still plenty to like here as the Dolphins host the Roosters in what looks like a proper measuring stick for two of the competition’s heavy hitters.
Plenty of stars will be missing because of representative duty, but the stakes are still high. The Dolphins want to back up their progress, while the Roosters are chasing another win after a run of eye-catching displays.
On paper, this has all the makings of a bruising contest between two sides heading in the right direction.
The Dolphins are hitting another level
For years, the Dolphins often found a way to let this kind of away game slip through their fingers. Tight finishes, missed chances and, at times, a lack of composure when it mattered most.
This 2026 version looks different.
Last week’s trip to Townsville showed that again. Against a Cowboys side that is never easy to handle at home, Kristian Woolf’s men were in complete control when it counted, running out 40 to 14 winners.
The final score makes it look one-sided. It wasn’t, not at half-time. The gap was only six points, and the contest was still alive.
From there, the Dolphins gradually pulled away through near-perfect execution.
They hogged the ball for long spells, posted an excellent completion rate and kept punching through the line with every set. Their ability to make metres after contact kept the Cowboys under constant pressure.
But the most impressive part right now is probably their defence.
Just 18 missed tackles across the whole game. At this level, that tells you everything about the collective effort and the confidence building inside the group.
Led by an increasingly influential Isaiya Katoa in the attacking structure, the Dolphins now look like a side that knows exactly how to win tight games.
And that’s usually what separates the good teams from the real contenders.
The Roosters have hit back
If the Dolphins made a statement, the Roosters certainly weren’t far behind.
Their trip to Canberra looked dangerous on paper against a Raiders side that is always a handful at home. Instead, Trent Robinson’s team produced one of their most complete performances of the season.
After just 40 minutes, the game was effectively done.
Leading 22-0 at the break, the Roosters smothered Canberra with steady territorial pressure and a fierce grip on the basics.
Their kicking game controlled the tempo, while the pack won the physical battle through the middle.
In attack, the numbers were eye-catching too.
More than 700 metres made after contact, six line breaks and relentless pressure on the opposition defence. The Roosters kept rolling forward and never let the Raiders settle.
But it was their defensive display that really stood out.
Even with several long stretches spent on their own line, Canberra found only one real opening all night. That says plenty about how sturdy this side has become again.
The big question now is whether the Roosters can back that up without several Origin players in the mix.
The core of the team is still strong, but those absences could trim their margin against a Dolphins side full of belief.
Try it for $0.99.
NRL prediction Dolphins vs Roosters
Under 53.5 points in the match
The Dolphins come in full of confidence, and their defence has been climbing steadily over the past few weeks.
The Roosters, for their part, are fresh off a top-class defensive effort against the Raiders and could take a more cautious approach with the Origin backdrop still hanging over the game.
Both sides have enough quality to land punches, but this feels more like a tactical scrap than an attacking shootout.
53.5 points looks a big number given how both teams are shaping up right now.
in your pocket.

Before anything else, a word on our picks
- What we publish on mathodds is analysis, nothing more. We’re giving an opinion, a read on the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport is what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a freak goal from nowhere… and the script changes completely.
- Let’s be clear: there’s no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when something looks like a banker, it never really is. And yes, that means you can lose. In fact, you will at some point.
- The smart move is to stay sensible. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Do not touch money you need to live. And above all: don’t chase losses. It rarely ends well.
- A bet should stay a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking too much space in your daily life, if it winds you up or puts you under pressure, take a break. And if needed, speak to a specialist organisation. That’s what they’re there for.
- At the end of the day, the responsibility is yours. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, even with the best analysis in the world.
- Important reminder: betting is illegal for minors and must comply with the law in your country. Gambling can spiral fast, bringing money problems, family tension and addiction. Need Help? Call 1-800-GAMBLER. In the UK? Visit https://www.gambleaware.org/https://www.gambleaware.org/.
No commitment from us
Our predictions are not a contract. They have no legal force. In plain terms: you cannot use them to claim anything if a bet loses.
Information changes
A prediction is always based on what we know when it is written. But in the meantime, a team sheet changes (like the Roosters one, for example), a player gets injured, the weather turns… and the analysis can quickly be out of date. We cannot be held responsible for that.
Your role
Before you bet, make sure betting is legal where you are. If it isn’t, that’s your responsibility, not ours.
Responsible gambling first
We cannot say it often enough: gamble in moderation. If you struggle to keep control, do not wait to seek help. We cannot be responsible for compulsive or excessive use of the information published on the site.
