Roosters vs Cowboys: a serious test for the Cowboys at Magic Round
Saturday night at Magic Round brings us a tasty matchup between the Roosters and the Cowboys at Suncorp Stadium.
On paper, Sydney look to have the clear edge. The Roosters have been building for weeks, while North Queensland arrive short-handed after the injury to Tom Dearden, a key part of their attacking structure.
Even so, this could be a lot tighter than the current line suggests.
The Cowboys are still capable of putting points on the board, while the Roosters have shown at times this season that they can struggle to keep the intensity up for the full 80 minutes.
The Roosters are finding their real level again
Over the past few weeks, the Roosters have looked like a side that has finally found its rhythm.
The attack is starting to click more naturally, the combinations are smoother, and the whole outfit looks far more dangerous than it did early in the season.
When Sam Walker gets time on the ball and James Tedesco is able to play going forward, this team becomes a nightmare to defend.
The expected return of Lindsay Collins is another big boost for Sydney.
In a game where the Cowboys are already weakened in the halves, Collins’ presence could help the Roosters win the physical battle through the middle early on.
That is often where the Roosters build their best performances.
They like to squeeze opponents bit by bit with Walker’s kicking, Tedesco’s support play and the ability of their edge men to cash in quickly when they get close to the line.
The warning for North Queensland is obvious: if Sydney take control of field position early, this could get ugly fast.
But the Roosters are not perfect either.
This season, we have seen them completely lose focus during certain stretches. They can dominate for 30 minutes, then just let the other side back in for no obvious reason.
And with such a big handicap on neutral ground, that inconsistency has to be factored in.
The Cowboys have to deal with the absences
Last week left plenty of frustration on the Cowboys’ side.
The golden-point loss to Parramatta was already hard enough to swallow, but the injury to Tom Dearden is probably the real turning point in this one.
Losing Dearden changes plenty.
His work around the ball, his speed of execution and his ability to break the line gave North Queensland constant energy in attack.
Without him, the side loses a lot of its spark.
That said, the Cowboys do not suddenly become a team that cannot attack.
Scott Drinkwater remains one of the most electric fullbacks in the competition, Jake Clifford has enough experience to steady things, and the outside backs are still capable of turning scraps into points in a hurry.
The proof? Even in defeat against Parramatta, North Queensland posted 30 points.
The real challenge will be mental.
The Cowboys must avoid that familiar 10- or 15-minute spell when the Roosters crank it up and punish every mistake.
If they stay disciplined, clean out of their own end and solid through the middle, they have every chance of hanging around.
A big-scoring clash looks likely at Suncorp Stadium
This has all the ingredients for a proper attacking show.
The battle between James Tedesco and Scott Drinkwater naturally grabs the eye. Both fullbacks are playing at a high level right now and can turn a match with a couple of touches.
In the middle, the contest between Jason Taumalolo and Naufahu Whyte should bring plenty of heavy contact too.
Both teams like to play at pace when the tempo rises, and the Magic Round atmosphere often drags games into open, chaotic territory.
The Roosters are the deserved favourites, but the Cowboys look capable of hanging on longer than many might expect.
Try it for $0.99.
NRL Prediction Roosters vs Cowboys
Roosters win by 9 points or more
Sydney arrive full of confidence and currently look much more settled as a unit than North Queensland.
Tom Dearden’s absence could weigh heavily on the Cowboys’ attacking shape, especially against a side that can pile on territorial pressure.
Even if North Queensland have enough talent to stay in it for a while, the Roosters look to have too many attacking weapons not to pull clear in the end.

Before anything else, a word on our predictions
- What we publish on mathodds is analysis, nothing more. We share an opinion, a current reading of things, but never a guarantee. Sport is what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a freak score from nowhere… and the whole script changes.
- Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when something looks obvious, it really is not. And yes, that means you can lose. At some point, that is inevitable.
- The best approach is to stay sensible. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Do not touch money you need to live on. And above all: do not chase losses, it rarely ends well.
- A bet should stay a game, not a job or a source of income. If you feel it is taking up too much space in your daily life, if it is irritating you or putting you under pressure, take a break. And if needed, speak to a specialist support service. That is what it is there for.
- In the end, responsibility is yours. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never go away, no matter how good the analysis is.
- Important reminder: betting is illegal for minors and must follow the law in your country. Gambling can spiral fast, leading to money problems, family tension and addiction. Need Help? Call 1-800-GAMBLER. In the UK? Visit https://www.gambleaware.org/https://www.gambleaware.org/.
No commitment from us
Our predictions are not a contract. They carry no legal weight. In plain English: you cannot use them to demand anything if a bet loses.
Information that can change
A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But between then and now, a team sheet changes, a player gets injured, the weather turns nasty… and the analysis can quickly be out of date. We cannot be held responsible for that.
Your role
