Hearts vs Falkirk: eleven men missing at Tynecastle, four straight wins for the visitors Scottish Premiership

Eleven Hearts players are ruled out of Sunday’s visit of Falkirk, and the newest name on that list is Stephen Kingsley, who came off just after the hour in Switzerland on Thursday night. Harry Milne, Calvin Miller and Blair Spittal were already sidelined, and Milne isn’t expected back until August 2027.

That 3-1 defeat to Thun was Hearts’ second loss in five days, following the League Cup semi-final defeat to city rivals Hibernian. It left Wouter Vrancken’s side without a win in three Conference League games and 32nd in the league-phase table, and it means they go into a home league game with three days’ rest and a thin squad.

Falkirk arrive in the opposite mood. They beat Celtic 2-0 last Sunday through Ethan Ross after three minutes and Scott Tanser on 38, their first win over Celtic since 2007, and it was their fourth straight Scottish Premiership victory. John McGlynn has taken the side from second-bottom to fourth, and he was named the division’s Manager of the Month for October.

The game kicks off on Sunday 8 November at 15:00 UK time at Tynecastle Park. Hearts are third after 11 league games, Falkirk fourth, and the gap between them in the table is small enough that a Falkirk win would put real pressure on the Edinburgh side’s place in the top three.

There’s also a recent result that Hearts won’t have forgotten. Falkirk won 2-1 when the sides met at the Falkirk Stadium on Tuesday 15 September, and that was Falkirk’s first league win of the season after six attempts.

The bookmakers still lean heavily towards the home side: Hearts are 1.60, with the draw and a Falkirk win both at 4.50. The reason is Tynecastle itself, where Hearts are unbeaten in five league games this season. In 13 meetings on record between the clubs, Hearts have won nine, Falkirk four, and not one has finished level.

Hearts: unbeaten in five league games at home, scoring in every match against the sides below them Hearts

Vrancken arrived in June, the first Belgian to manage the club, after Derek McInnes left for Rangers and took several key players with him. Twenty-three matches into his time in charge, the record is eight wins, six draws and nine defeats, which tells you how much of the rebuild is still unfinished.

The league table is kinder than that overall record. Hearts are unbeaten in five Premiership home games, with two clean sheets, and against teams below them in the standings they’ve played nine, won six, drawn one and lost two. They’ve scored in every one of those nine games, 24 goals in total, against 15 conceded.

The trouble has come away from Tynecastle and in Europe. Celtic beat them 7-1 at Celtic Park in October, and the Conference League has produced a draw with Nordsjaelland and defeats to Trabzonspor and Thun. Thursday’s loss in Switzerland was put down to poor defending, which is the same weakness that showed up in Glasgow.

The absence that matters most for this fixture is Calvin Miller. When Falkirk won in September, McGlynn said the key was keeping Hearts’ two wingers, Miller and Josh McPake, quiet. Miller is now injured, so McPake carries more of the load on the flanks, with Kerjota likely on the other side.

The expected side has Reus in goal behind Gillies, Fagan-Walcott, Findlay and McCart, with Altena and Mendy in midfield. Up front, Guendouz partners Claudio Braga, who has started all six of the recorded meetings with Falkirk in this spell.

Falkirk: four straight league wins and only 12 goals conceded Falkirk

Falkirk’s season started slowly. The 2-1 win over Hearts on 15 September was the first league victory, and McGlynn admitted afterwards that the fixture list hadn’t been kind to his newly promoted side. Ben Krauhaus later grabbed the winner at Pittodrie, but in that September game it was a move from Brad Spencer to Ryan Strain that set up the opener.

The current run began in mid-October, straight after a defeat to Dundee. Since then Falkirk have won 2-1 at Hibernian, 3-0 at home to Kilmarnock, 1-0 at Aberdeen and 2-0 against Celtic. Only Rangers have collected more points across the last six Premiership matchweeks.

The defence is the reason the run has lasted. Falkirk have conceded 12 league goals, and only two clubs in the division have let in fewer. Three of the four wins in this sequence came with a clean sheet, and the only goal conceded was at Easter Road.

Strain is now a problem, though. He went off early in the Celtic game and won’t play on Sunday, and he joins Leon McCann, Aodhan Doherty, Joseph Gardner, Ethan Laidlaw, Keelan Adams and Aidan Nesbitt on the injury list. Allan is expected to fill in at right-back, which takes away one of the side’s main sources of width.

Otherwise McGlynn has a settled group. Falkirk have named the same eleven in each of the last two matches, Spencer has started all six recorded meetings with Hearts, and Jacob Murrell leads the line with Barbrook behind him and Ross and Eames out wide.

Probable lineup Hearts: Reus; Gillies, Fagan-Walcott, Findlay, McCart; Kerjota, Altena, Mendy, McPake; Guendouz, C. Braga
Probable lineup Falkirk: Bain; Allan, Neilson, Henderson, Tanser; Melniks, Spencer; Ross, Barbrook, Eames; Murrell

Our prediction: Hearts to win (odds 1.60)

Falkirk’s form is better, and Hearts have eleven players unavailable three days after a European trip. I still think the home record carries more weight here: five league games at Tynecastle without defeat, and a goal in every match against sides below them in the table.

No draw in 13 recorded meetings also narrows things down. Falkirk’s four-game run has been built on a tight defence and on Strain’s delivery from the right, and with Strain out, a side that’s kept three clean sheets in four now has to reorganise its back line at the ground where Hearts haven’t lost a league game all season.

The rotation risk after Thursday is real, and that’s why the price is 1.60 rather than shorter. Hearts at home, with McPake and Braga still available, is the pick.

About our free predictions

  • What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
  • Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
  • The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses: that rarely ends well.
  • A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
  • Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
  • Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.

Information changes

A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But between publication and kick-off, a lineup can change, a player picks up an injury, the weather turns, and the analysis can quickly be outdated. We cannot be held responsible for that.
