Charlton Athletic vs Sheffield United: 11 without a win against 13 points from six
Charlton won their first three league games of the season. They haven’t won any of the 11 since, and in that run they’ve scored six goals and conceded 20.
The last four have all been defeats: 2-0 at Watford, 3-1 at home to Norwich, 3-0 at Middlesbrough and 1-0 at home to Bolton on Tuesday. Sam Dalby scored the Bolton goal after a misplaced pass from Nathaniel Chalobah, who then went off at half-time with a thigh problem.
Sheffield United come to The Valley on Saturday 7 November, kick-off 15:00 UK time. They’re ninth on 22 points, one behind eighth-placed West Ham, and Charlton are 21st on 14, four points above the drop zone.
Chris Wilder’s side took nine points from their first eight games. They’ve taken 13 from the last six, and on Tuesday Sydie Peck scored a first-half hat-trick in a 3-2 win at Preston.
The fixture itself has gone Charlton’s way lately. They won 1-0 at Bramall Lane in September 2025 with a late Tanto Olaofe goal, then 1-0 at The Valley on 17 January, a game in which Sheffield United had two players sent off.
Sheffield United are 2.10 to win, the draw is 3.30 and Charlton 3.50. I think the away price is the right side of this.
Charlton Athletic: six goals in 11 games and Chalobah’s thigh again
Charlton have scored 11 league goals in 14 games, a goal difference of minus 11. At The Valley the numbers are five scored and six conceded in seven matches, with two wins, three draws and two defeats.
That home defence isn’t the problem. Three clean sheets in seven home games is a reasonable return, but Charlton have also failed to score in three of those seven, and the Bolton defeat followed the same pattern.
Nathan Jones said afterwards that his side had “so many opportunities around the edge of the box”. The result was a fourth straight defeat and no goal for the third time in four games.
Tyreece Campbell is the top scorer with four league goals. Rob Apter has been out with a knee injury since early September, and Charlton haven’t won a league game since their opening three.
The midfield is the worry. Chalobah’s thigh injury came back against Bolton in his first start since late August, and Jones thinks it’s the same problem that kept him out at the start of the season. Coventry, Skipp or Ouma could replace him, and Sichenje and Godden are also out.
Charlton have won one away game all season. That puts more weight on what they do at The Valley, where Norwich won 3-1 on 24 October and Bolton 1-0 on Tuesday.

Sheffield United: Peck’s hat-trick and a side climbing from the bottom half
Sheffield United’s last six league games read W4 D1 L1. They beat Lincoln 3-0 on 10 October, lost 3-2 at Portsmouth, won 1-0 at Bristol City, drew 1-1 with Derby, beat Wrexham 1-0 and won 3-2 at Preston.
Peck’s hat-trick at Deepdale took him to four league goals. Patrick Bamford has five in 11 games and Tom Cannon three, so the goals have come from more than one place.
Bamford’s fitness is the main question. He hurt his shoulder against Derby and is facing a late test involving contact, and if he doesn’t make it Cannon or Tyrese Campbell is likely to start up front with Brereton Diaz.
Joe Rothwell is out after a minor groin operation and is expected back after the international break. Ryan Oné and Shackleton are also out, while Kalvin Phillips, who has a goal and two assists, has recovered from an ankle problem and is likely to start on the bench.
Liam Kitching should return to the back four. On the road Sheffield United have won three of seven, drawing two and losing two, at around 1.6 goals scored a game.
The two defeats to Charlton came in very different circumstances. One was a late goal at Bramall Lane, and the other came with Sheffield United down to nine men. This season Wilder’s side have taken 13 points from their last six league games, after nine from the first eight.
Probable lineup Charlton Athletic: Mannion; McNamara, Jones, Koumetio, Bell; Coventry; Alli, Knibbs, Grant, Campbell; Leaburn
Probable lineup Sheffield United: Cooper; Choudhury, Tanganga, Kitching, Burrows; Chong, Peck, Riedewald, Donovan; Brereton Diaz, Cannon

Our prediction: Sheffield United to win (odds 2.10)
Charlton have gone 11 league games without a win and lost the last four, scoring one goal in that sequence. Sheffield United have taken 13 points from six games and won three of seven away from home.
The head-to-head is the argument for Charlton, with two straight 1-0 wins. I’m not convinced it carries over, because one of those wins came against nine men and Charlton’s attack has dried up since.
I’d back Sheffield United at 2.10 even if Bamford misses out. Peck’s form in midfield and Charlton’s injury list in the same area point to the visitors controlling the game.
in your pocket.

About our free predictions
- What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
- Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
- The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses: that rarely ends well.
- A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
- Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
- Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.

A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But between publication and kick-off, a lineup can change, a player picks up an injury, the weather turns, and the analysis can quickly be outdated. We cannot be held responsible for that.
