Sunderland vs Chelsea: two straight wins over the Blues, and one league win all season Premier League

Sunderland have won both of their last two league meetings with Chelsea, each by 2-1: at Stamford Bridge on 25 October 2025 and at the Stadium of Light on 24 May, the final day of last season. That second result helped send them into Europe.

Six months later the same two clubs meet at the same ground on Sunday 8 November, 14:00 UK time, and the table has turned over completely. Sunderland are 20th with five points from nine games, one win, two draws and six defeats. Chelsea are fourth on 16, with five wins, a draw and three defeats.

The reason is mostly at one end of the pitch. Sunderland have scored seven league goals in nine matches. Chelsea have 19, though their 15 conceded explains why they aren’t closer to the top.

Sunderland’s two competitions have also pulled apart. They’re unbeaten in the Europa League and host Dinamo Zagreb on Thursday, while their last three league games have brought one point.

That Thursday game is the part of this fixture I’d weigh most heavily. Sunderland will have less than three days between that match and this one, and they’ll face a Chelsea side that beat Manchester United 2-0 last Saturday.

Sunderland: seven league goals, and Le Fee’s penalty the first since September Sunderland

Enzo Le Fee’s penalty at Coventry on 31 October ended a wait for a league goal that went back to 20 September. It came in the 67th minute with Sunderland already 3-0 down, and they lost 3-1.

The games before that brought a 2-0 defeat at Bournemouth on 18 October and a 0-0 draw at home to Leeds a week later. Their goal difference of minus 10 is the product of a side that hasn’t lost heavily so much as failed to score.

The home record has been the steadier part of the season, with four points from four league games at the Stadium of Light before this one. Across a wider sample of five home games they’ve won twice, drawn once and lost twice, with two goals scored and four conceded.

That sample points to the kind of game Sunderland want: low scoring, with the back line sitting in. The projected 5-4-1 has Hume, Reinildo, Mukiele, O’Nien and Alderete across the defence, Xhaka and Sadiki behind Le Fee and Rigg, and Brobbey alone up front.

Dan Ballard (hamstring) and Romaine Mundle (knee) are out. Nordi Mukiele and Wilson Isidor were both listed as doubts last weekend, with Isidor given a 50% chance of playing, and his absence would leave Brobbey with little cover after Thursday.

Chelsea: 19 goals, 15 conceded, and a long list of absentees Chelsea

Chelsea’s last five league games show how wide their range is. They lost 3-0 at Brentford on 18 September, beat Bournemouth 5-1 on 10 October, won 2-0 at Everton, lost 2-0 to Tottenham on 24 October and then beat Manchester United 2-0.

Those five matches produced nine goals for and six against, with two clean sheets. Both defeats in that run came without a goal scored, so this is a side capable of going flat as well as running over opponents.

Away from home they’ve been ordinary, with six points from their first four league trips, and a five-game away sample of two wins and three defeats. Seven scored and nine conceded in those games leaves them short of what their league position suggests.

The squad is stretched. Joao Pedro (thigh), Reece James (knee), Jamie Gittens (ankle) and Aaron Anselmino were all listed as out for the last round of league games, and Maxence Lacroix (hamstring) and Jorrel Hato were both doubts. Emiliano Martinez has a head injury with no return date, so Penders is projected in goal.

Without Joao Pedro, the projected side has Welbeck leading the attack, with Palmer, Caicedo, Henderson, Rogers and Neto behind him. There’s enough in that midfield to create chances against a Sunderland defence that has conceded 17 in nine.

Probable lineup Sunderland: Roefs; Hume, Reinildo, Mukiele, O’Nien, Alderete; Xhaka, Sadiki, Le Fee, Rigg; Brobbey
Probable lineup Chelsea: Penders; Colwill, Acheampong, Lacroix, Hato; Rogers, Henderson, Caicedo, Neto, Palmer; Welbeck

Our prediction: Chelsea to win at 2.00

Chelsea are 2.00, Sunderland 3.60 and the draw 3.60. Two straight defeats to this opponent and that ordinary away record explain why the price is as generous as it is for a meeting between fourth and 20th.

The honest argument against the pick is Chelsea’s injury list, and Sunderland’s two wins over them came by the same score in very different seasons. I still prefer the visitors because the hosts have one league goal in their last three games and play again on Thursday night.

Chelsea have 12 more goals than Sunderland after nine rounds. At 2.00, I’d take them to win it, with Palmer the player most likely to decide a tight game.

About our free predictions

  • What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
  • Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
  • The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses: that rarely ends well.
  • A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
  • Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
  • Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.

Information changes

A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But between publication and kick-off, a lineup can change, a player picks up an injury, the weather turns, and the analysis can quickly be outdated. We cannot be held responsible for that.
