Halys opens Court 1 with a first
Quentin Halys got the Rolex Paris Masters day on Court 1 off to a flying start on Tuesday. The 46th-ranked Frenchman beat compatriot Arthur Fery, who plays under the British flag and sits 32nd, 7-6 (6), 7-5 in the first round. Seventeen aces carried him through a tight opening set that went to a tiebreak, and he broke late in the second to close it out.
At 30, Halys has now reached the second round of this Masters 1000 for the first time. His coach, Olivier Malcor, singled out how the player handled the emotion of the occasion, which in front of a home crowd in an indoor hall is no small thing.

Tiafoe next, and a second Frenchman through
Halys now meets Frances Tiafoe, the world number eight, in round two. It is a big step up in ranking, but Halys has the serve to stay in any set against the American on a fast indoor court.
Arthur Rinderknech also moved on, though not in the way he would have chosen. He lost the first set 6-3 to Francisco Cerundolo, took the second 7-6 (2), and led 2-0 in the decider when the Argentine retired with a back problem. Rinderknech will play Italy’s Mattia Bellucci, ranked 66th, next.
Ugo Humbert also advanced, beating Botic van de Zandschulp. The day was less kind to 17-year-old Moise Kouame, who lost to Portugal’s Nuno Borges 6-3, 6-1 on the main court.
