Dugarry: “It disgusts me”
Paulo Fonseca is on his way out of Olympique Lyonnais, and the reaction on French radio was not kind. According to RMC Sport, which says it has confirmed the move, the Portuguese coach is set to leave in the coming days for Sporting, his boyhood club, where he would replace Rui Borges.
On RMC’s “Rothen s’enflamme” on Monday, Christophe Dugarry, the 1998 World Cup winner, called it terrible for football. Players used to be branded mercenaries, he said, and now coaches are heading the same way. His sharpest point was about timing: the squad was built for Fonseca, there are eight months left in the season, and young players still need him. He did not buy the tears the coach shed after Sunday’s 2-0 win over Angers either, arguing that nobody pushed him out.

Rothen: Lyon had no choice, the message is the problem
Jérôme Rothen accepted that Lyon are in financial difficulty and have to sell. What he could not accept was the club losing a coach everyone admires in the middle of the campaign, when his contract runs out in June anyway. In his reading, Fonseca went to the board himself with the opportunity, then cried on the pitch in front of his players.
Dugarry also reminded listeners of the backdrop. Fonseca served a six-month suspension earlier in his Lyon spell, the club stood by him while he watched from the stands, and the group rallied around him.
The succession race is already running. RMC lists Carlos Vicens, sacked by Braga, as the favourite to take the job.
