Tennis: Van Assche leads French charge in Paris, Jacquet falls

Van Assche escapes a break point on the way to round two

Luca Van Assche became the first Frenchman to win a main-draw match at the Rolex Paris Masters this year, beating Argentina’s Mariano Navone 6-3, 7-5. The opening set took 47 minutes. The second was far tighter, with no break for either man until the closing stages, and Van Assche had to dig out of a 15-40 hole at 5-6 before taking his first match point after 1h55.

The 47th-ranked Frenchman, a junior Roland-Garros champion in 2021, now meets the winner of American Learner Tien against Greek veteran Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Jacquet fades against a qualifier

The second French result of the day went the other way. Wild card Kyrian Jacquet pushed Tomas Machac through a first-set tiebreak, then lost the thread, going down 7-6, 6-1 to the Czech, who came through qualifying.

Elsewhere on Monday, Cameron Norrie beat Matteo Arnaldi 6-4, 1-6, 6-3, Daniel Merida took out Sebastian Baez 6-4, 6-2, Ignacio Buse beat Zizou Bergs 6-2, 6-4 and Mattia Bellucci got past fellow Italian Lorenzo Sonego 6-4, 6-3.

What Tuesday brings

France has two more names on Centre Court on Tuesday. Arthur Rinderknech opens against Francisco Cerundolo, then 17-year-old Moise Kouame, fresh from his Challenger title in Brest, takes on Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. The day’s closing match in daylight is Novak Djokovic against Valentin Vacherot, the Basel champion. Newly crowned world number one Alexander Zverev does not start until Wednesday, when he faces Lorenzo Musetti. Jannik Sinner is missing the event with a knee problem.
