Tampa Bay Lightning vs Winnipeg Jets: a rested Tampa side against a Jets team without Hellebuyck or Morrissey NHL

Four days. That’s how long the Lightning will have gone without a game when the Jets arrive at Benchmark International Arena on Thursday 29 October, puck drop at 7:00pm ET. Tampa Bay last played on 24 October in Salt Lake City, at the end of a road trip that finished with two straight defeats.

Winnipeg gets no such break. The Jets host Florida on Tuesday, fly south for this game, then face the Panthers again in Florida on Friday 30 October. Thursday is the first half of a back-to-back, and three games in four nights is a heavy load for a roster already short on bodies.

The standings as of 26 October put the two teams on different tracks. Tampa Bay sat at 7-3-1 with 15 points, fourth in the Atlantic Division. Winnipeg was 4-4-3 with 11 points, seventh in the Central, after a 2-1 home loss to Montreal on 25 October.

This is the first meeting of the season. The last one went Winnipeg’s way, 4-1 on 5 March 2026, but the Jets roster that won that night has changed in the one position that matters most. Connor Hellebuyck was traded to New Jersey on 23 October after asking out in late August, and Winnipeg received a package that included Dawson Mercer and Nico Daws.

The market has made its call. Tampa Bay carries around a 70% implied win probability on the moneyline, which tells us the price on the Lightning to win outright is too short to be worth playing. We still side with Tampa Bay, through a different market.

Tampa Bay Lightning: 21 goals in five games, and Kucherov now the franchise’s all-time leader Tampa Bay Lightning

Tampa Bay’s last five games produced 21 goals. They beat Seattle 4-3 in overtime on 16 October, with Victor Hedman scoring the winner, then Vancouver 4-2 the next night and Vegas 6-2 on 21 October. The road trip that followed was less kind: a 6-3 loss in Colorado on 23 October, despite two goals from Jake Guentzel, and a 5-4 overtime defeat in Utah 24 hours later.

Nikita Kucherov is the headline. He tied a franchise record in the Vegas win and, over the weekend, passed Steven Stamkos to become the Lightning’s all-time leading scorer. He’s been playing on the right of Hagel and Anthony Cirelli, the line that does most of the heavy lifting at five-on-five.

The second unit has Goncalves and Point with Guentzel on the right, so Tampa Bay can roll two lines that score. Against a Jets team that has to manage minutes on a back-to-back, that depth counts for more than it would on a normal night.

The worry sits on the blue line. Hedman is listed as day-to-day with a lower-body injury, and Zemgus Girgensons is also day-to-day with an undisclosed issue. Neither has been confirmed for Thursday. If Hedman can’t go, the third pair that had him alongside Crozier needs reworking, and Tampa Bay loses its best puck-mover from the back end.

In goal, Andrei Vasilevskiy remains the No. 1, with Dennis Hildeby as the backup on the last road trip. The four days off make it very likely Vasilevskiy starts, and we’d treat that as the single biggest edge in this game.

Winnipeg Jets: Skinner’s .902 career save percentage now has to carry a 4-4-3 team Winnipeg Jets

Stuart Skinner arrived in Winnipeg on a two-year, US$7.5 million deal signed on 1 July. Going into this season he had played 218 NHL games with a 2.77 goals-against average and a .902 save percentage. Those are serviceable numbers for a 1B. With Hellebuyck now in New Jersey, they’re the numbers the Jets have to live with as a starter.

His busiest season was 59 games in 2023-24, and the drop-off behind him is steep. Clay Stevenson made 34 saves in a 3-2 loss to Carolina on 18 October, and Daws, part of the return from New Jersey, gives the Jets another option. On the first night of a back-to-back, Winnipeg has to decide whether to use Skinner here or save him for Florida on Friday.

The defense is thinner than usual too. Josh Morrissey went on injured reserve with a wrist injury on 19 October, which takes away the Jets’ top minutes-eater and their main source of offense from the back end. Vladislav Namestnikov is listed as week-to-week with an undisclosed injury.

Results have been patchy since the opening fortnight. Winnipeg beat Minnesota 5-2 on 14 October behind two goals from Cole Perfetti, then lost 4-3 in overtime to Chicago the next night, 3-2 to Carolina on 18 October and 2-1 at home to Montreal on 25 October. Winnipeg managed one goal on home ice in that Montreal game.

Kyle Connor and Mark Scheifele are still here, and Connor scored on the power play against Chicago. Winnipeg finished 35-35-12 last season, and inside the first month of this one it has lost its starting goaltender and its top defenseman.

Probable lineup Tampa Bay Lightning: Vasilevskiy; Moser, Carlson, McDonagh, Cernak, Hedman (day-to-day), Crozier; Hagel, Cirelli, Kucherov, Goncalves, Point, Guentzel, Mikheyev, Girgensons (day-to-day), Holmberg (based on the last road trip, subject to change)
Probable lineup Winnipeg Jets: Not announced at time of publication

Our prediction: Tampa Bay Lightning to win in regulation time (60-minute result)

We’d avoid the straight moneyline. At roughly 70% implied, it’s priced below the level where we’re willing to back a favorite, so we’re taking the Lightning to win inside 60 minutes instead. Odds on that market weren’t posted at the time of writing, and we’d want a price of 1.45 or longer before playing it.

The case rests on three things we can measure. Tampa Bay has four days of rest against a team playing its second game in three nights before another one on Friday. Vasilevskiy is likely to start, while Winnipeg is choosing between Skinner and a goalie with fewer games behind him. And the Jets are without Morrissey, the player who usually takes the toughest assignment against a line like Hagel, Cirelli and Kucherov.

What could go wrong is Hedman. If he sits, Tampa Bay’s defense loses its best player and the two road losses to Colorado and Utah, where the Lightning allowed 11 goals, become the more relevant sample. We still think the gap in goal and the schedule outweigh that, and we’d expect Tampa Bay to settle this before overtime.

About our free predictions

  • What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
  • Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
  • The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses: that rarely ends well.
  • A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
  • Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
  • Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.

Information changes

A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But between publication and kick-off, a lineup can change, a player picks up an injury, the weather turns, and the analysis can quickly be outdated. We cannot be held responsible for that.
