Hannover 96 vs Kaiserslautern: four straight clean sheets meet a side 16th in the table DFB-Pokal

Kaiserslautern haven’t conceded a goal in their last four 2. Bundesliga games. They beat Braunschweig 1-0, drew 0-0 at Heidenheim, beat Bochum 2-0 and won 1-0 in Nürnberg on Saturday, a run that has taken them up to third.

On Wednesday 28 October they go to the Heinz von Heiden Arena for a DFB-Pokal second-round tie with Hannover 96, kick-off 19:45 UK time. It goes to extra time and penalties if level after 90 minutes.

The table shows the gap. Kaiserslautern have 18 points from nine games with nine goals scored and only four conceded. Hannover are 16th with eight points, eight goals scored and 15 conceded, and they lost 2-0 at Braunschweig on Sunday.

Hannover have already changed manager. Christian Titz was sacked on 14 September and Sandro Wagner took over a week later, but the results haven’t turned: since his arrival they’ve lost 3-0 at Magdeburg, drawn 1-1 with St. Pauli and lost at Braunschweig.

Torsten Lieberknecht’s Kaiserslautern have the better recent record in this fixture too. They won the last meeting 3-1 in January, Prtajin and Leopold had both scored before Sahin and Skyttä struck in stoppage time.

The prices put Hannover ahead at around 2.19, with the draw at 3.60 and Kaiserslautern at 2.98. I think that’s the wrong way round, and the double chance on the visitors is where I’d go.

Hannover 96: eight goals in nine league games and a new manager still searching Hannover 96

Hannover’s league season has two wins in it. They won 1-0 at Darmstadt and 2-1 at home to Bochum, and lost five of the other seven, including 1-0 at home to Wolfsburg and 3-1 at Energie Cottbus on 9 August.

Scoring is the weakness. Eight goals in nine games is less than one a match, and they’ve failed to score in two of their last three league outings.

The cup has been a different story. Hannover won 9-1 at SV Hemelingen in the first round on 22 August, Lars Gindorf scoring a hat-trick and Thórdarson twice. Gindorf has six goals in all competitions, three of them in the league.

He may not be fully fit. Gindorf is a doubt after illness, and Mustapha Bundu (thigh) and Karl Steinmann (thigh muscle) are both out. Hartel and Thórdarson, with three goals each, are the other attacking options Wagner can turn to.

The summer brought plenty of change. Loretz arrived from Luzern to take the gloves, Hugonet came from Magdeburg and Sahiti from Hamburg, while Leopold, who scored against Kaiserslautern in January, left for Gladbach.

Kaiserslautern: four goals conceded in nine games, unbeaten in five Kaiserslautern

Kaiserslautern’s only league defeat came on 12 September, 3-0 at Magdeburg. Since then they’ve won four and drawn one, conceding nothing in the last four.

Lieberknecht’s side have also drawn 0-0 with Wolfsburg and Karlsruhe, and they won 3-0 against Darmstadt and 2-1 at St. Pauli earlier in the season.

Goals have come from different players. Erencan Yardimci, on loan from Hoffenheim, scored the winner against Braunschweig and again at Nürnberg on Saturday. Lukovic and Sahin, from the penalty spot, scored against Bochum.

There are absences up front. Ivan Prtajin, who scored against Hannover in January, is out with an Achilles rupture, Owen Gibs has a pelvic injury and Yardimci is a doubt. That would leave Kanaté and Lukovic as the likely front pair.

Kaiserslautern needed extra time in the first round. Kanaté scored in the final minute of extra time to win 1-0 at Waldhof Mannheim on 21 August.

Probable lineup Hannover 96: Loretz; Neubauer, Tomiak, Ghita, Hugonet; Taïbi, Hartel, Thórdarson; Oudenne, Chakroun, Källman
Probable lineup Kaiserslautern: Krahl; Murphy, Gyamfi, Haas, Joly, Elvedi; Sahin, Skyttä, Sauer; Kanaté, Lukovic

Free Football Prediction: Hannover 96 vs Kaiserslautern

Our prediction: Kaiserslautern or draw (double chance) @ 1.63

I’m backing Kaiserslautern not to lose in 90 minutes. They’ve conceded four goals in nine league games and none in their last four, and Hannover have scored eight in nine. Hannover have failed to score in two of their last three league games, and they now face a defence that has conceded four in nine.

Home advantage and the cup format are the arguments for Hannover, and they did win this fixture 1-0 in August 2025. But that was under a different manager and before Leopold’s move to Gladbach, and Wagner’s team has taken one point from three league games since he arrived.

The double chance at 1.63 covers a draw after 90 minutes, which fits the way Kaiserslautern have played all season. Kaiserslautern or draw is my pick.

About our free predictions

  • What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
  • Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
  • The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses: that rarely ends well.
  • A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
  • Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
  • Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.

Information changes

A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But between publication and kick-off, a lineup can change, a player picks up an injury, the weather turns, and the analysis can quickly be outdated. We cannot be held responsible for that.
