AC Milan vs Bologna: unbeaten in the league, beaten 3-0 in Europe
Bournemouth beat AC Milan 3-0 in the Europa League on Thursday. Kluivert and Tavernier scored from the spot, Maignan was sent off before the half-hour for pushing both hands into Tyler Adams’ face, and Adli added a free kick six minutes from time.
In Serie A, Milan haven’t lost at all. Ruben Amorim’s side have taken 15 points from seven games, with four wins and three draws, and he’s the first Milan coach since 1963 to go unbeaten through his first seven league matches. The defeats this season have all come in Europe, 2-0 at home to Benfica and now 3-0 on the south coast of England.
Bologna come to San Siro on Wednesday 28 October, kick-off 17:30 UK time, in the ninth round of Serie A. They’re 13th with eight points from eight games, but they’ve won two of their last three, both away from home, since Raffaele Palladino replaced Domenico Tedesco in September.
Milan play Udinese away on Sunday night first, and the derby against Inter follows on Saturday 31 October. That’s three games in seven days, and Wednesday’s match sits in the middle of them.
We expect Amorim to rotate. Even so, the gap between the two attacks is wide: Milan have scored 14 league goals, Bologna eight.
Bookmakers price Milan at 1.57, the draw at 3.90 and Bologna at 5.00. We’d still take the home side, for reasons that have more to do with San Siro than with Thursday night.
AC Milan: three home league wins and an injury list that keeps growing
Milan have played three league games at San Siro this season and won all three, scoring eight and conceding two. They beat Venezia 2-0 in August, Lecce 3-0 in September and Atalanta 3-2 on 18 October, when Goncalo Ramos, Adrien Rabiot and Mario Gila put them 3-0 up before Atalanta came back late.
Rabiot is Milan’s top league scorer with four goals. Diego Moreira, signed from Strasbourg in the summer, has three, including two off the bench at Lazio, and Ramos and Cisse have two each. Cisse also scored a hat-trick in the 4-0 Europa League win at Salzburg on 15 October.
The squad has changed shape since August. Rafael Leao was sold to Galatasaray on 30 August, and Gila (from Lazio) and Ramos (from PSG) arrived for a combined fee of about €100m. Moreira cost around €65m including bonuses.
Absences are piling up at the back and on the flanks. Gabbia tore a thigh muscle at Sassuolo on 11 October and won’t be back before January, Saelemaekers is out until the spring after ankle surgery, and Chukwueze is injured. Loftus-Cheek went off at half-time in Bournemouth with a knee problem and is a doubt.
The Bournemouth defeat needs some context. Milan played more than an hour with ten men, conceded two penalties and had Torriani in goal after Maignan’s red card. Maignan’s dismissal came in UEFA competition, and he’s expected to start at Udinese on Sunday.

Bologna: seven points in four games under Palladino, without Piccoli
Tedesco was sacked in mid-September with one point from four league games, after a 1-0 defeat in Naples. Palladino has collected seven points from his four, playing a 3-4-3, and signed a contract to June 2029 when he arrived.
Saturday’s 2-0 win in Cagliari was the cleanest of those results. Casale headed in a Cambiaghi corner on 57 minutes for his first Bologna goal, Bernardeschi converted a penalty on 80, and Cagliari managed one shot on target all afternoon.
Palladino used Odgaard as a false nine in Sardinia, with Dovbyk and Enem on the bench. Piccoli, signed in the summer, strained a hamstring against Inter on 17 October and is expected to miss around three weeks, which rules him out of Wednesday. Orsolini hasn’t played since hurting his thigh at Lecce on 11 October, and his availability is unconfirmed.
Goals remain the issue. Bologna have scored eight in eight league games, and Bernardeschi is their top scorer with two. Six different players have one each, which spreads the threat but also shows nobody has taken charge of the scoring.
Away from home they’re two wins and two defeats, with four goals scored and three conceded. Both wins came under Palladino, at Lecce and Cagliari, and both defeats, at Atalanta and Napoli, finished 1-0.
Probable lineup AC Milan: Maignan; Gila, De Winter, Pavlovic, Bartesaghi; Musah, Modric, Rabiot; Moreira, Ramos, Pulisic (subject to rotation after Udinese)
Probable lineup Bologna: Skorupski; Darmian, Casale, Theate; Zortea, Ferguson, Pobega, Miranda; Bernardeschi, Odgaard, Cambiaghi

Our prediction: AC Milan to win (1.57)
We’re siding with Milan. They’ve won all three home league games, they’re unbeaten in Serie A, and they’ve beaten Bologna in the last two league meetings by an aggregate 4-0, including 3-0 in Bologna in February. The Europa League defeat was played mostly with ten men and doesn’t change our view of the league side.
Bologna have improved under Palladino and their away record since his arrival is two from two. They’ll be without Piccoli, though, Orsolini is in doubt, and an attack that has scored eight goals in eight games doesn’t look built to win at San Siro.
Rotation is the risk, with Udinese before and Inter after. Milan’s squad still has Ramos, Moreira, Cisse and Rabiot to choose from, and at 1.57 we’ll take the home win.

About our free predictions
- What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
- Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
- The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses: that rarely ends well.
- A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
- Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
- Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.
