Cardiff City vs Birmingham City: a short-handed defence against the Championship’s in-form side
Gabriel Osho won’t be in the Cardiff back line on Saturday. The defender was sent off in last weekend’s 2-2 draw at Middlesbrough, and his suspension comes with Dylan Lawlor already out with a hamstring problem until after the November international break.
That leaves Brian Barry-Murphy light at centre-back against the form side of the Championship. Birmingham are fourth with 20 points from 11 games, and they’re the only team in the division with a 100% record since the September/October international break.
Kick-off at the Cardiff City Stadium is 15:00 UK time on Saturday 24 October.
Cardiff have been hard to beat at home and easy to score against everywhere. They’re unbeaten in five home league games, with two wins and three draws, and they haven’t kept a clean sheet in any of their last ten matches.
Birmingham’s last three league games finished 1-0, 4-0 and 3-0, all in their favour. Three straight Championship wins is their best run since August 2023.
The prices point towards goals. Both teams to score is available at 1.50, over 2.5 goals at 1.57, and Birmingham draw-no-bet at 1.80.
Cardiff City: unbeaten at home, without a clean sheet in ten
Jack Moylan is why Cardiff score. He has nine goal involvements in the Championship this season and three goals in his last two appearances, two of them in the 5-1 win over Watford on 13 October.
He scored first at Middlesbrough as well, in a game Cardiff drew 2-2 and finished without Osho.
The home numbers over their last ten matches cut both ways: 2.4 goals scored per game at the Cardiff City Stadium, 1.4 conceded, and both teams scoring in every one of those home fixtures.
Cardiff haven’t won a league game on the road all season. At home, their last league defeat came against Wycombe in March.
They’ve taken seven points from the last four: wins over Charlton (3-1) and Watford (5-1), a 2-1 defeat at Blackburn and the draw at the Riverside. Before that, a 1-1 with Stoke and a 1-0 defeat at Bolton.
Yousef Salech is available again after a shoulder injury and should lead the line. Calum Chambers is still working back from a knee problem, and the expected back four has Bielik and Fish in the middle.

Birmingham City: three clean sheets in a row and Millar with seven goal contributions in seven
Liam Millar has seven goal contributions in his last seven matches. The Canada international, on loan from Hull, scored twice in the 3-0 win over QPR last time out.
The run behind him reads: 2-1 at Derby, 2-2 with Middlesbrough, then 1-0 at West Brom, 4-0 against Preston and 3-0 against QPR. That’s five unbeaten, four wins, and nothing conceded in the last three.
They’ve travelled well. Over their last ten matches, Birmingham won three of their four away games, and both teams scored in three of those four.
The squad is filling up again. Max Bird, Taylor Gardner-Hickman and Demarai Gray are back in contention, with Gray expected to start on the bench.
Paik Seung-Ho is the only fitness doubt, with a muscle problem, and Carlos Vicente could come in for Patrick Roberts on the right.
History isn’t on their side at this ground. Cardiff have won 12 of the 25 meetings to Birmingham’s four, and the last one, in April 2024, ended 1-0 to Cardiff. Birmingham did win on their last trip to the Cardiff City Stadium, in December 2023 under Wayne Rooney.
Probable lineup Cardiff City: Trott; Kpakio, Bielik, Fish, Bagan; Robertson, Tanner, Turnbull, Moylan, Willock; Salech
Probable lineup Birmingham City: Beadle; Osayi-Samuel, Neumann, Klarer, Cochrane; Iwata, Solis, Vicente, Stansfield, Millar; Priske

Our prediction: Both teams to score at 1.50
I’m backing goals at both ends. Cardiff have scored in every home game of their last ten and kept a clean sheet in none of those ten, and Osho’s ban takes another centre-back out of a defence that was already conceding.
Birmingham’s three straight clean sheets cut against the pick. They came against Preston, QPR and West Brom, though, and none of those sides arrived having averaged 2.4 goals per home game, which is Cardiff’s figure.
Thirteen of the 25 meetings between these clubs have seen both teams score. At 1.50, I’d take it, with 1-2 or 2-2 the scores I’d expect.

About our free predictions
- What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
- Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
- The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses: that rarely ends well.
- A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
- Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
- Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.

Information changes
A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But between publication and kick-off, a lineup can change, a player picks up an injury, the weather turns, and the analysis can quickly be outdated. We cannot be held responsible for that.
