Bologna vs Inter: the league leaders without Lautaro, against a Bologna side that struggles at home
Inter have two faces this season. In Serie A they’re unbeaten, top of the table and have dropped just two points. In the Champions League they’ve lost both games, the latest a 4-3 home defeat to Club Brugge on Tuesday. Saturday’s trip to Bologna (18:00 Paris time, Stadio Renato Dall’Ara) is about which version shows up.
The domestic numbers are strong. Five wins and a draw from six matches, 18 goals scored, and a 3-0 win over Parma last weekend. Cristian Chivu’s side sit level on points with surprise package Lazio at the top.
Europe is another matter. The Brugge defeat made it four straight Champions League losses, a club record, and it came despite a Lautaro Martinez brace. Worse still, the captain picked up an injury that’s expected to keep him out until the next international break.
Bologna have their own upheaval. Vincenzo Italiano left in the summer, Domenico Tedesco was sacked after a winless start, and Raffaele Palladino has only just taken over. His first two games brought a 1-1 draw with Torino and a 2-1 win at Lecce.
Recent meetings have been surprisingly even. Inter have won only three of the last nine league games against Bologna, and May’s trip here finished 3-3. Bologna also knocked Inter out of last season’s Supercoppa semi-final on penalties.
So is this a trap? It could be. But the gap in quality right now is hard to ignore, and Bologna’s home record tells you everything you need to know about where the edge lies.
Bologna: 11 points from 17 home league games since last December
That stat doesn’t bear close inspection. Since last December, Bologna have picked up just 11 points from 17 league games at the Dall’Ara, conceding 26 goals along the way. There’s no sugarcoating it: that’s relegation-level form on home soil.
This season’s league form is thin. Five points from six games, five goals scored, and home defeats to Lazio (0-1) alongside draws with Sassuolo (2-2) and Torino (1-1). The attack simply hasn’t produced.
The new-manager bounce offers some hope. The 2-1 win at Lecce was a genuine boost, and Palladino will want to build on it quickly.
The bad news? Riccardo Orsolini, who scored a spectacular opener in that win, suffered a thigh injury in the same game. Samuel Mbangula will be assessed before kick-off, while Emil Holm is a long-term absentee who isn’t due back for four months.
There are small positives. Jens Odgaard has returned to full training, and Matteo Darmian, recently signed on a free transfer after leaving Inter, made his first start for the club last week. He’ll know exactly what his former side wants to do.
Without Orsolini, though, the supply line to Piccoli dries up badly. That’s a problem Palladino can’t fix in one week.

Inter: unbeaten in Serie A, but Lautaro’s injury forces a rethink up front
Losing Lautaro Martinez for a month would hurt any side. For Inter, it means Marcus Thuram needs a new partner, with Ange Bonny or Pio Esposito set to step in.
The good news for Chivu is the depth of the squad. Inter have scored three or more in four of their six league games, beating Monza 4-1, Napoli 3-2, Udinese 5-3 and Parma 3-0. The goals come from everywhere.
The defence is less convincing. Two against Napoli, three against Udinese, two at Roma and four at home to Brugge. This isn’t the miserly Inter of old, and it’s a weakness Bologna will try to target.
Other absences are worth noting. John Stones is still struggling with a flexor problem, and Curtis Jones could be out until November with a right thigh injury. With five games to play before the end of the month, ending with the Milan derby, some rotation is likely.
Even so, the core is intact. Nicolo Barella, Hakan Calhanoglu and Federico Dimarco give Inter control and creativity, and that midfield remains the best in the league.
A Champions League hangover is the main risk. But in Serie A, this group has responded every time it’s been asked a question.
Probable lineup Bologna: Pessina; Darmian, Heggem, Theate; Zortea, Ferguson, Pobega, Miranda; Bernardeschi, Cambiaghi; Piccoli
Probable lineup Inter: J. Martinez; Pavard, Akanji, Augusto; Spence, Barella, Calhanoglu, Sucic, Dimarco; Thuram, Esposito
Free Serie A Prediction: Bologna vs Inter
Our prediction: Inter to win @ 1.60
Bologna’s home form has been poor for ten months, they’ve scored five league goals all season, and they’ve just lost their most dangerous attacker. Against a side averaging three goals per Serie A game, that’s a tough combination.
Inter will want to put Tuesday behind them quickly, and domestic games have been their safe space. Even without Lautaro, Thuram and the midfield trio carry enough quality to break down a Bologna side still learning a new coach’s ideas.
The head-to-head adds a note of caution, and Inter may concede. But over 90 minutes, the champions should have too much for a Bologna team that hasn’t found its feet at home in a long time.

About our free predictions
- What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
- Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
- The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses, that rarely ends well.
- A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
- Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
- Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.
