Brentford vs Liverpool: the unbeaten Bees host a Liverpool side running short of bodies Premier League

Only three sides in the Premier League are still unbeaten after six rounds. Brentford are one of them, alongside Manchester City and Everton, and that alone tells you how much the picture has shifted in west London. Saturday’s visit of Liverpool to the Gtech Community Stadium (16:00 Paris time) is exactly the kind of fixture that tests whether that run is the real thing.

The table adds an edge. Brentford sit fourth on 10 points, with two wins and four draws. Liverpool are ninth, a single point behind, and a win would carry them past the Bees and into the top four.

Here’s the thing about this matchup: it rarely stays tight. At least two goals have gone in across each of the last six meetings. Last season’s two games produced four points for Brentford, including a 3-2 win at the Gtech almost a year ago to the day, before a 1-1 draw at Anfield on the final weekend in May.

Liverpool arrive in a strange mood. A 3-0 home defeat to Manchester City, played with ten men, was Andoni Iraola’s first loss in charge. Three days later they went to Linz and won 6-3 in the Champions League, with Bradley Barcola scoring the first hat-trick of his career. Brilliant going forward, loose at the back.

That’s the short version.

There’s also a quirk worth knowing. Iraola has faced Brentford seven times as a manager and has never beaten them: five draws, two defeats. Is that just a coincidence? Maybe. But it isn’t the record you’d want to carry into this ground, against a side that hasn’t lost at home in the league since last season.

Both squads are stretched. Brentford are sweating on several defenders and their most dangerous winger, while Liverpool are missing four first-teamers and have three more major doubts. Teams that are short of bodies tend to open games up rather than close them down, and that’s the angle we keep coming back to.

Brentford: eight home league games unbeaten, but the treatment room is filling up Brentford

Keith Andrews said he was “disappointed” with a 2-2 draw at Aston Villa last weekend. Six years ago, Brentford were a Championship club. Now a point away at a Champions League side feels like two dropped, and that shift in expectations says plenty about where this group is.

The numbers back it up. Brentford average two goals per league game and 15.83 shots per match, joint fourth in the division. They also lead the league in crosses at 6.33 per game, which makes them a real problem for any back line that struggles in the air. The 3-0 win over Chelsea three weeks ago wasn’t a fluke.

The worry is fitness. Kevin Schade (shoulder) and Jannik Schuster (ankle) both came off injured at Villa Park, while Mikkel Damsgaard (ankle) and Nathan Collins (calf) are doubts. Josh Dasilva, Antoni Milambo and Kaye Furo are already out. That’s a lot of names for a squad of this size.

Schade matters most. He scored home and away against Liverpool last season and has three league goals this term. If he can’t go, Dango Ouattara is likely to start on the left, with Sepp van den Berg, a former Liverpool player, stepping in at centre-back if Schuster misses out.

The away form is the flip side: no win in eight Premier League away games. At home it’s a different story, with three wins and five draws in their last eight top-flight matches. Not since 2022-23 have they gone this long unbeaten in front of their own fans.

A side that knows what it’s about. Brentford won’t sit back on Saturday, and they can ill afford to, because their whole game is built on getting the ball into the box early and often.

Liverpool: Barcola’s hat-trick can’t hide a squad stretched thin Liverpool

Six scored, six conceded. That’s Liverpool’s last two matches combined, and it captures the Iraola era so far: thrilling in one half, fragile in the next.

The league record is more modest than the Champions League fireworks suggest. Two wins, three draws, one defeat and just 1.17 goals per game, joint 13th in the division for scoring. Draws against Newcastle (2-2), Nottingham Forest (2-2) and Fulham (0-0) have cost them ground they’ll want back quickly.

The squad situation makes for uncomfortable reading. Hugo Ekitike (Achilles), Conor Bradley and Giovanni Leoni (both knee) are out. Ryan Gravenberch serves a one-match ban after his red card against City. Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexander Isak and Cody Gakpo are all doubts, and none of them looks likely to start even if passed fit.

That leaves Iraola leaning on youth. Trey Nyoni, 19, could make his first Premier League start next to Alexis Mac Allister, and Lewis Koumas, who scored in Linz, is the likely option up front. Exciting, sure. But asking a teenager to hold the middle at one of the league’s most awkward away grounds is a big ask.

The positive is Barcola. The club-record signing finally opened his account in style, and with Florian Wirtz pulling the strings behind him there’s enough quality to hurt anyone. Ronald Araujo and Jeremie Frimpong also found the net on Wednesday, so the goals are spread around.

Before last season, Liverpool had beaten Brentford five times in a row, 11-1 on aggregate. That era feels a long way off now.

Probable lineup Brentford: Kelleher; Kayode, Van den Berg, Ajer, Lewis-Potter; Yarmolyuk, Janelt; Anthony, Jensen, Ouattara; Thiago
Probable lineup Liverpool: Alisson; Araujo, Jacquet, Van Dijk, Kerkez; Nyoni, Mac Allister; Munoz, Wirtz, Barcola; Koumas

Our prediction: Both teams to score

Brentford score at home, and Liverpool score almost everywhere when Barcola and Wirtz are on the pitch. Six straight meetings with at least two goals, a home side averaging two per game, and a visiting attack that just put six past LASK: goals at both ends feel like the natural outcome here.

Liverpool’s defensive issues won’t disappear this week. They’ve conceded three in each of their last two games and they’ll be without Gravenberch’s cover in midfield. Brentford lead the league in crosses and have the shot volume to punish that, even without Schade.

Odds for this market hadn’t been published at the time of writing, so check the price before kick-off. A Brentford result wouldn’t shock us either, but both teams finding the net is the cleaner read of this game.

About our free predictions

  • What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
  • Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
  • The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses, that rarely ends well.
  • A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
  • Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
  • Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.
