Utah breaks new ground in Edmonton
The Utah Mammoth beat the Edmonton Oilers 4-2 on Thursday night, snapping Edmonton’s five-game winning streak. It was the first time Utah had ever beaten the Oilers in regulation, and the first time it had done so in Edmonton. The loss was also Edmonton’s first in regulation this season.
Barrett Hayton opened the scoring on a power play at 10:38 of the first period, pouncing on a loose puck after Kailer Yamamoto was denied on a partial breakaway. It was Hayton’s first goal of the year. Clayton Keller made it 2-0 with a power-play one-timer at 11:57 of the second, set up by Logan Cooley.

Draisaitl answers, Cooley restores the lead
Edmonton replied inside two minutes. Leon Draisaitl finished a give-and-go with Connor McDavid to make it 2-1. Utah needed only 23 seconds to respond: Cooley redirected a rush chance for his first goal of the season and a 3-1 lead.
Shakir Mukhamadullin pulled the Oilers within one 100 seconds into the third, when his wrist shot from the side boards banked in off Utah defender Andrew Peeke. Keller sealed it with an empty-netter in the final minute for his second of the night. Cooley also had an assist, and Nick Schmaltz picked up two helpers.
Goalie duel and what is next
Karel Vejmelka stopped 21 shots for Utah, several in the third period. Devon Levi made 20 saves for Edmonton, and his franchise-record run of four straight wins to open his Oilers career ended. McDavid’s assist on the Draisaitl goal stretched his season-opening point streak to six games. He has 18 points, four goals and 14 assists.
Utah has won three in a row. The teams meet again Saturday in Salt Lake City, where the Oilers will look to avoid back-to-back regulation losses.
