Florida Panthers vs Minnesota Wild: a points-every-night road trip ends with the home opener
Florida have taken points from all four games of their season-opening road trip. Now they’re home. The Panthers open at Amerant Bank Arena against the Minnesota Wild on Saturday, puck drop 6 PM ET, which is midnight in Paris.
The data paints a specific picture here. Florida are 2-0-2 with eight goals scored and eight conceded. Two goals a night at both ends. It’s not flashy, but it’s a side that keeps games tight and finds a way to stay in them.
Minnesota come in on a two-game losing run. They’re 2-1-1, beat Nashville and Boston early, then dropped games to Buffalo and Tampa Bay. Four goals in those last two outings. The attack has gone quiet at the wrong moment.
The market leans Florida. DraftKings has the Panthers at -155, roughly 1.65 in decimal, with the Wild at +130, around 2.30. The total sits at 6.5, which already tells you nobody expects a shootout.
Both sides are allowing exactly two goals per game. So where’s the edge? It comes from what happens at the other end, and from a home crowd seeing its team for the first time this season.
Florida Panthers: Tkachuk delivers, Markstrom holds firm, and Barkov is still missing
Tuesday in Los Angeles summed up this team. Down 1-0 after the first period, Seth Jones levelled early in the second. Then Matthew Tkachuk took a pass from Sam Bennett on the rush and beat Darcy Kuemper at 11:20 of the third. Florida 2, Kings 1.
That was their first regulation win of the season. It’s also the template. Tight, controlled, decided by one moment of quality.
Jacob Markstrom made 19 saves on 20 shots that night. The Panthers’ defensive structure is limiting what opponents get, and when the goaltender only needs to handle 20 pucks, a single goal at the other end can be enough.
Tkachuk is carrying the attack with two goals and an assist through three games. Carter Verhaeghe and Seth Jones have chipped in too. The concern is depth. Captain Aleksander Barkov remains out with a significant leg injury, and Brad Marchand took a stick to the face late in the second period in Los Angeles before being helped off. His status for Saturday is worth checking before puck drop.
Even so, Florida keep producing points. Four games, four nights with something to show for it. That record takes some explaining, and the explanation is defensive discipline.

Minnesota Wild: 36 shots in Tampa, and only two goals to show for it
Thirty-six shots. Two goals. That was Minnesota on Thursday in Tampa, a 3-2 loss that followed defeat in Buffalo.
The Wild dug themselves a two-goal hole early. Quinn Hughes scored and added an assist, Blake Coleman converted on the power play with Kirill Kaprizov setting it up, and the third period was all Minnesota. They couldn’t find the equaliser past Dennis Hildeby. It’s the kind of night that frustrates a dressing room.
Across the season, the Wild have been solid without the puck, allowing eight goals in four games. Jesper Wallstedt stopped 32 of 35 in Tampa. The defensive side of the game isn’t the issue.
Scoring is. Eleven goals in four games looks fine on paper, but seven of those came in the two wins. Over the last two outings the attack has managed two per night, and they’re heading into a building where the hosts concede two on average.
Hughes is driving play from the blue line, and Kaprizov is still the most dangerous forward on the ice. But Minnesota need more from their secondary scorers. Right now, they’re relying on a handful of names to do everything.
Back-to-back road losses, a first regulation defeat, and now a home opener atmosphere in Sunrise. It won’t get easier from here.

Our prediction: Florida Panthers to win (odds 1.65)
Florida have earned points in every game this season, all of them on the road. Now they’re home for the first time, with a defensive structure that’s allowing two goals a night and a goaltender in Markstrom who’s barely being tested.
Minnesota have lost two straight and scored four goals across those games, despite putting 36 shots on net in Tampa. Their finishing has dried up at a bad time, and Florida’s game is built on giving very little away.
Barkov’s absence and Marchand’s knock are the risks. But Tkachuk is in form, the crowd will be loud for the opener and the Wild’s attack is stuck. Florida at 1.65.
in your pocket.

About our free predictions
- What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
- Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
- The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses, that rarely ends well.
- A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
- Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
