Rayo Vallecano vs Athletic Bilbao: level on points, but only one side is unbeaten at home
Eight points each going into matchday eight. Rayo Vallecano and Athletic Bilbao go into Saturday’s game separated by nothing in the table, with Athletic 10th and Rayo 12th on goal difference.
The setting is unusual. Works at Vallecas mean Rayo are playing their home games at Butarque, Leganes’ ground, this season. It hasn’t held them back so far. They’re unbeaten there, and that’s the detail that shapes this one. Kick-off is 14:00 Paris time.
The history isn’t on Rayo’s side, though. They haven’t beaten Athletic since 2021. That’s a long run for a fixture that’s usually close, and it’ll be on the minds of everyone at Butarque.
Both sides arrive with a sense that their seasons haven’t quite started. Rayo reached the Conference League final last season and are now in mid-table. Athletic have no European football at all this year and have drawn their last two games.
So who blinks first? Rayo have the in-form striker and the home record. Athletic have the head-to-head and, on paper, the stronger squad. It’s finely balanced, which is exactly why the detail matters.
Rayo Vallecano: Camello’s goals and a perfect record at their temporary home
Sergio Camello has seven goals and an assist already. Last season he scored five in La Liga all year. The Olympic champion has finally kicked on, and he’s the main reason Rayo are competitive at all.
At Butarque, they’ve been hard to beat. They drew 1-1 with Alaves on the opening night, then beat Racing Santander 3-2 and Espanyol 2-1. That’s seven points from nine at a ground that isn’t even theirs.
Away from it, the picture is grim. Rayo lost 2-1 at Sevilla, 5-2 at Barcelona and 4-1 at Real Madrid. They’ve conceded 16 goals in seven games, which tells you everything you need to know about the defence on the road. They did pick up a 1-1 draw at Osasuna just before the break.
The injury list is a worry. First-choice keeper Batalla has a fractured fibula and won’t be back soon, so Audero steps in. Defenders Vertrouwd and Luiz Felipe are out, and Nteka is unavailable. Captain Isi Palazon has been injured but could return.
Alvaro Garcia, with two goals and two assists, has been the other bright spot on the left. If he and Camello combine the way they have at home, Rayo will cause problems for anyone.

Athletic Bilbao: two straight draws and no Nico Williams
Athletic’s season has had three distinct phases. They lost their first two games, 3-1 to Sevilla and 2-0 at Barcelona. Then they won 2-0 at Celta Vigo and beat Atletico Madrid 3-0, which looked like the turning point.
It hasn’t quite been. A 1-1 draw against Elche followed, then a 0-0 at home to Alaves. Edin Terzic’s side are unbeaten in four, but two draws against teams they’d expect to beat leave them in the bottom half.
The biggest blow came during the break. Nico Williams, who has one goal this season, picked up an injury with Spain and isn’t expected to play. That takes a lot of pace and threat out of this team.
Inaki Williams is fit and has two assists, while Robert Navarro has two goals and Berenguer one. Defenders Egiluz and Dani Vivian are both injured, and midfielder Mikel Rodriguez has suffered a cruciate ligament rupture that could end his season. Louis-Jean has been promoted to play left-back after Adama Boiro left for West Ham this summer.
Athletic concede few goals, just six in their first six league games. Without Nico Williams, though, they’ve got fewer ways to hurt a team that sits deep and counters.
Probable lineup Rayo Vallecano: Audero; Ratiu, Lejeune, Sadick, Pedrosa; Ciss, Lopez; Frutos, Diaz, Garcia; Camello
Probable lineup Athletic Bilbao: Simon; Areso, Alvarez, Laporte, Berchiche; Galarreta, Canales; Navarro, Sancet, Berenguer; I. Williams

Our prediction: Rayo Vallecano win or draw (double chance) @ 1.48
Rayo are unbeaten in three league games at Butarque this season, with two wins and a draw. Camello has seven goals and is the most in-form player on the pitch.
Athletic come in on two straight draws and without Nico Williams, their most dangerous attacker. They’re solid at the back, but their attack has gone quiet: one goal in their last two games.
The head-to-head is the reason we’re not backing Rayo outright. Covering the draw as well gives us the home side’s strength without leaning too heavily on it.

About our free predictions
- What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
- Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
- The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses, that rarely ends well.
- A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
- Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
- Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.
