Illawarra Hawks vs Tasmania JackJumpers: a 1-4 host meets a visitor on a three-game winning run
The Illawarra Hawks welcome the Tasmania JackJumpers to WIN Entertainment Centre on Friday 9 October, with tip-off at 10h30 Paris time. It is a Round 4 fixture that pairs the team at the foot of the ladder with one of the league’s early risers.
The Hawks sit 1-4 after five games, and their last two results show how wide their range has been. They beat Adelaide 113-91 on Friday 2 October, then lost 113-96 to South East Melbourne two days later.
Tasmania arrive at 3-1 and have won three in a row, beating South East Melbourne, Melbourne United and Brisbane along the way. Two of those results came down to the final seconds or to overtime, which says plenty about how the JackJumpers handle pressure.
Both teams played twice in three days last week, Tasmania on 1 and 3 October and the Hawks on 2 and 4 October. That makes energy and rotation management a quiet storyline before the ball is even thrown up.
The preview on Gobet leans toward the visitors, backing the JackJumpers at -2.5 and calling their basketball much better than the Hawks’. The question for the analysis below is whether a home team at the bottom of the table can flip that script in front of its own crowd.
Illawarra Hawks Analysis
Illawarra’s 1-4 record sits at the bottom of the ladder, yet the two latest games tell two different stories. The 113-91 win over Adelaide showed an attack that can run freely, while the Sunday loss to the Phoenix showed how quickly the same group can lose its edge.
Against South East Melbourne, the second quarter settled the night. The Hawks were outscored 36-18 in that period and went into halftime trailing 59-41, a gap they never closed.
The shooting numbers were just as lopsided. Illawarra hit 5 of 24 from three while the Phoenix made 16 of 41, and that swing of 11 made threes alone explains most of the 17-point margin.
Several Hawks still produced in defeat. Kelan Martin scored 17 points on 7-of-14 shooting, Milton Doyle added 14 points and 11 assists, and Makur Maker finished with 14 points off the bench on 7-of-11.
Coach Justin Tatum said afterwards that the Phoenix out-hustled his team on a lot of plays, which points to effort and loose-ball work rather than a broken system. The decisive point for Illawarra is bringing the intensity of the Adelaide night to a home game, because that version of the team can hang with anyone.

Tasmania JackJumpers Analysis
Tasmania are 3-1 and arrive on the back of a 109-99 overtime win at Brisbane on Saturday 3 October. That game needed a comeback, since the Bullets led 47-40 at halftime.
The JackJumpers turned it around with a 34-18 third quarter and then won the extra period 18-8. Taran Armstrong finished with 29 points on 9-of-17 shooting, including a perfect 7 of 7 from the free throw line.
Will Magnay added 22 points, 9 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 blocks, Josh Bannan had 22 points and 11 rebounds, and Dakota Mathias chipped in 19 points with 3 steals. Magnay is averaging 17.5 points, 7.8 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 2.8 blocks this season, and his rim protection anchors the defense.
Two days earlier Tasmania beat Melbourne United 84-82 in Hobart after leading by 19, with Armstrong hitting a fadeaway jumper inside the final 10 seconds. They did that without Bryce Hamilton (ACL), Majok Deng, Ben Ayre and Anthony Drmic, so the depth has already been tested.
The decisive point for the JackJumpers is how that depth holds up on short rest and another road trip. The record suggests a team that wins tight games, and that habit usually travels well.

Our prediction: Tasmania JackJumpers win
Tasmania bring the cleaner form, with three straight wins over South East Melbourne, Melbourne United and Brisbane, and two stars in Armstrong and Magnay who have delivered in the biggest moments. Their last two games were both decided in the final stretch, which is exactly the situation a road team needs to be comfortable in.
Illawarra’s recent games swing from 113 points scored to 113 points conceded, and a 5-of-24 night from three against the Phoenix shows how thin the margin becomes when the defense slips. A home crowd helps, but it does not solve a team that is 1-4.
The JackJumpers should be sharper late in the game, and we back them to win in Illawarra.

About our free predictions
- What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute basket — and the script changes completely.
- Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
- The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses — that rarely ends well.
- A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation — that’s what they’re there for.
- Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
- Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.

Information changes
A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But between publication and tip-off, a lineup can change (like Illawarra Hawks’s, for example), a player picks up an injury — and the analysis can quickly be outdated. We cannot be held responsible for that.
