Twenty-three names, five of them new. Zinedine Zidane picked his first France squad on Friday and handed senior call-ups to Guillaume Restes, Jérémy Jacquet, Lucas Da Cunha, Andy Diouf and Estéban Lepaul.

Four matches sit across this camp and the next. Turkey away on 25 September, Belgium on the 28th. Italy come to the Stade de France on 2 October for Zidane’s first home game in charge, with Belgium back three days after that.

Who came in, who came back, who missed out

Jacquet has started the season well at Liverpool. Toulouse goalkeeper Restes takes the place of Brice Samba. Da Cunha, a Rennes academy graduate, has been quietly consistent at Como.

Lepaul was Ligue 1’s top scorer last season and has picked up where he left off at Rennes. Diouf is listed among the defenders after a solid opening run as a wing-back at Inter. Malo Gusto drops out.

Adrien Truffert returns after five years in the wilderness. Eduardo Camavinga is back in as well. Going the other way: William Saliba is injured, Aurélien Tchouaméni is short of match fitness, and neither Lucas Digne nor either Hernandez brother made the 23.

Deschamps’ spine, largely untouched

Zidane follows 14 years of Didier Deschamps. The squad he inherits was already built, and he has not taken it apart.

Kylian Mbappé, Ousmane Dembélé, Michael Olise, Désiré Doué and Bradley Barcola make up the attack with Lepaul. Dayot Upamecano, Jules Koundé and Ibrahima Konaté anchor the defence. Adrien Rabiot, Manu Koné, Warren Zaïre-Emery and Rayan Cherki work the midfield alongside Camavinga and Da Cunha. Mike Maignan is still the No. 1.
