MotoGP: Zarco returns and steals the last Q2 spot at Aragon

Four hundredths covering three riders

Marco Bezzecchi went quickest in Friday practice at MotorLand Aragon, a 1’45”455 that also broke the circuit record. Alex Marquez finished 10 thousandths behind him. Marc Marquez, 38 thousandths.

That is the state of the championship in one timing screen. Bezzecchi’s Aprilia is now trading blows with the Ducatis at a track nobody expected it to like, and the one-lap pace he chased for half a season has finally turned up.

Three months out, and straight into Q2

The result that mattered came from tenth place. Johann Zarco rode competitively for the first time since spring after a long injury layoff, and took the final automatic Q2 berth.

He got it on his last run, bumping LCR team-mate Diogo Moreira out of the top ten in the process. Skipping Q1 reshapes the whole weekend for him. One fewer session, a set of tyres kept in the bank, and Saturday morning spent alongside the fast men rather than scrapping to join them.

Aragon rarely tells the truth on a Friday

Fabio Di Giannantonio, Fermin Aldeguer, Raul Fernandez, Jorge Martin, Pedro Acosta and Franco Morbidelli round out the direct qualifiers. Plenty of Ducatis in there. It no longer reads like a closed shop.

This circuit punishes people. The long left in the final sector exposes any error in positioning, and the wind moves the braking references between laps. Friday pace at MotorLand has misled better forecasters than most.

Zarco knows the arithmetic better than anyone. He is 36, and every weekend on the sidelines is expensive. This one has started the way it needed to.
