MLB: Yankees outlast Braves in 10 innings behind Max Fried

Settled in extras

Ten innings. That is what it took to separate these two at Yankee Stadium, where New York finally shook off Atlanta 3-2. A grind of a night, decided in the extra frame with 42,297 in the seats.

Here is the odd part. The Braves did the louder damage. Two home runs to none, and it still was not enough to get them out of the Bronx with a win.

Fried carries New York

Max Fried drew the assignment for the Yankees, and the left-hander delivered against a Braves lineup that has been one of the hottest in the National League for weeks. He gave his team a chance every time he took the mound.

The box score barely told them apart, seven hits each. A game like that turns on the little things, and over 3 hours and 16 minutes the crowd stayed locked in until the final out.

A result with weight to it

For New York this lands as more than a line in the standings. Beating a rival playing this well, at home, in a game this thin, carries a message with the back end of the regular season creeping up.

Atlanta will stew on this one. Two home runs and seven hits, and nothing to show for it but a long flight home.
