Five runs in the 10th, and a tight game stops being tight
Nine innings of nothing, then it came apart in about four minutes. New York beat the Angels 6-3 in Anaheim on Tuesday night to take the rubber game of the series. Austin Wells did the damage.
Two outs, bases loaded, 1-2 count. The Yankees catcher put a Luke Murphy fastball past second baseman Christian Moore, who dove and got nothing but dirt. Amed Rosario scored from second as the automatic runner. Jose Caballero came around behind him. Wells went 2 for 2 on the night.
The rest arrived in a hurry. Cody Bellinger, Trent Grisham and Ben Rice each singled in a run. Five in one extra inning, in September, with a division race still breathing.

Schlittler pitched the best game of the night and got nothing for it
Eight innings. One run, two hits, no walks, nine strikeouts. Ninety-nine pitches, 71 for strikes, and a stretch of 17 straight batters retired between the second and the seventh. Cam Schlittler was not the winning pitcher.
Here is the number that frames his year: 19 of his 29 starts have gone for one run or fewer. Do that across a full season and voters start writing your name on Cy Young ballots.
Vaughn Grissom broke up the shutout with a 408-foot shot to dead center, two outs in the seventh. David Bednar took the win on a clean ninth with three strikeouts. Michael Fulmer gave up two in the bottom of the 10th, one earned, on a Moises Ballesteros homer.
Anaheim keeps sinking
New York sits at 80-60. The Angels are 53-87, losers of nine of 10, and they have now dropped six straight games that went past the ninth. Their extra-innings record falls to 4-13.
Reid Detmer did not deserve any of it. He carried a 1.55 ERA over eight starts since the All-Star break into Tuesday, then gave the Angels seven innings of one-run ball, six hits, eight strikeouts, no walks. His bullpen handed it back.
