Twenty-four hours, two decisions
Michael Duff is out at Adams Park. Wycombe Wanderers confirmed on Tuesday morning that the head coach had left the club, along with assistant head coach Alex Morris, ending a spell that lasted a little under a year.
The timing tells its own story. On Monday the Football Association charged Duff with misconduct over his red card at the end of Wycombe’s 2-1 defeat at Sheffield Wednesday on 1 September, alleging that he used abusive or insulting words towards a match official after the final whistle. The club moved before the FA case had gone anywhere.
Wycombe pointed to results instead, citing a disappointing run stretching back to the spring. That run reads badly whichever way you slice it. Three wins in the previous 18 games. A new season opened with seven matches and no victory in any of them, four drawn and three lost. In League One alone the Chairboys have taken three points from a possible 15.

A record that stopped adding up
Duff arrived on 18 September 2025 as the replacement for Mike Dodds, bringing a reputation built at Cheltenham, Barnsley and Huddersfield. He leaves having won 20 of his 52 matches in charge, with 15 draws and 17 defeats. That works out at roughly 1.44 points per game, the sort of return that keeps a League One side mid-table rather than climbing out of it.
The spring collapse is what turned patience into pressure. A club that had spent the winter looking upwards spent the run-in looking over its shoulder, and nothing in the opening five league fixtures suggested the drift had stopped.
The signing that arrived too late
What makes the call awkward is the deal that came days before it. Wycombe completed a club-record transfer for striker Jayden Wareham from Exeter City, the proven goalscorer Duff had publicly asked for. Wareham scored on his debut in Saturday’s 3-3 draw with MK Dons. His head coach got one match out of him.
Rice and Vyshnyakov go again
Owners Dan Rice and Eduard Vyshnyakov have not shown much appetite for waiting since taking control in May 2024. The next permanent appointment will be their third manager or head coach in sixteen months. An interim was expected to be named later on Tuesday, with the club offering no timetable for anything beyond that.
