Mercedes lead, Red Bull close in
Toto Wolff expects a “full-on fight” at the front of Formula 1 in 2027, and he says Red Bull will be in it. The Mercedes boss made the comments Monday, six days before the United States Grand Prix in Austin.
Mercedes are close to a championship double, and Kimi Antonelli could clinch the drivers’ title in Texas if results fall his way. But the gap has narrowed. Mercedes won eight of the first 10 rounds of the new regulations and only three of the last seven. Max Verstappen has taken the last two races, including a dominant win in Singapore.
Wolff did not hide his respect. “You need to take your hat off to what Red Bull has done this season,” he said. He also said Red Bull’s first in-house power unit is performing strongly, and that he had not yet seen Singapore data showing it lagging.

Red Bull’s upgrade window has closed
Red Bull go to Austin chasing a third straight win and a place ahead of McLaren in the constructors’ standings. Their last major upgrade arrived at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, and team boss Laurent Mekies says nothing substantial is coming before the season ends. The focus has moved to 2027.
Mekies warned that the “pecking order could very rapidly change” if rivals bring upgrades. He credited the Milton Keynes team, led by Pierre Wache and Ben Hodgkinson, for the car’s progress.
The weekend starts Friday 23 October with practice, qualifying follows on Saturday, and the race is Sunday 25 October at 8pm UK time.
