Four minutes, then the foot
Justin Champagnie played just 3 minutes and 55 seconds on Monday in Charlotte. He scored two points, grabbed two rebounds and went down in the first quarter. By Wednesday he was in surgery.
The Washington Wizards announced the operation to repair a fracture in his right foot. They gave no timeline. The Athletic reports the team is hoping the 25-year-old forward can be back by the All-Star break. Washington lost that game 110-103.

A career-best start, cut short
The timing hurts because Champagnie was having his best stretch as a pro. In his first three games he averaged career highs across the board: 23.1 minutes, 9.0 points and 9.3 rebounds. For a player who had averaged 17.5 minutes over his career, that was a real jump.
His full line is 7.1 points, 4.7 rebounds and 1.0 assists over 191 regular-season games, 51 of them starts. He has passed through the Toronto Raptors (2021-23) and the Boston Celtics (April to July 2023) and has been with Washington since February 2024. His twin brother, Julian, plays forward for the San Antonio Spurs.
The schedule does not wait. The Wizards are at Cleveland on Wednesday night and host the Hornets on Friday, both without their rebounding forward.
