Sixteen straight points from a player averaging 2.5
2.5 points a game. That was Holly Winterburn’s average before this one. Her career high? Six.
She checked in midway through the first quarter with Portland up 10-9, then ripped off the last 16 points of the period for her team. Sixteen in a row. A three, two mid-range jumpers, two finishes at the rim, a bucket plus the foul, and two free throws.
The only shot she missed in the quarter? A heave from 20 metres at the buzzer.
End of the quarter: 26-16 to the Fire.

Portland never trailed
The Fire pulled out an 84-82 win on the road against the Seattle Storm. Winterburn finished with 20 points on 8 of 14 shooting, plus seven rebounds, five assists and three steals. Easily the best night of her career.
Bridget Carleton added 14 points, hitting 4 of 10 from deep. Megan DiLeo chipped in 14 points and nine rebounds. Carla Leite, back after a brief injury layoff, logged 14 points and six assists.
Portland (14-20) has now won three of its last four. For a roster that has been grinding all season, the timing could hardly be better.
Seattle had a chance to win it
The Storm cut it to one with seven seconds left when Natisha Hiedeman drained a three. 83-82. On the final possession, Hiedeman went again from the left wing. The shot barely kissed the rim.
Seattle shot 33% for the night, making 27 of 81 attempts. Hard to win like that, even after going 10-4 in the last four minutes.
Awa Fam led the Storm with 20 points on 7 of 12 shooting and nine rebounds. Ezi Magbegor added 13, Jordan Horston put up 12 points and 11 rebounds. Dominique Malonga struggled badly, going 3 of 15, but still grabbed 12 boards. Flau’Jae Johnson, Seattle’s rookie, missed a second straight game with an ankle issue.
Seattle is 7-29. It is a long season when things are going this badly.
