Wimbledon 2026 : Jannik Sinner keeps his throne after a stirring final against Alexander Zverev
For more than two hours, neither man could really seize control. Service games rattled through, rallies got tougher and every big point felt like it could swing the final. In this battle between the two best players around right now, Jannik Sinner found the answer at exactly the right time. The Italian beat Alexander Zverev in four sets (6-7 [7], 7-6 [2], 6-3, 6-4) to keep hold of his title on the London grass.
It gives him his first Grand Slam of the year, only weeks after a brutally frustrating exit at Roland-Garros. Once again, the world No 1 answered a setback the hard way: by winning.
A final locked up for a long time
The opening set set the tone. Both men served with authority and chances were thin on the ground. Zverev, aggressive on the forehand, was willing to take more risks than usual and it paid off. The tie-break eventually went his way after he saved a set point with an ace.
The second set played out in much the same fashion. No breaks, very few openings and the sense that one tiny detail would decide it. This time, Sinner handled the tie-break brilliantly. More aggressive on return, cleaner in the longer exchanges, he levelled the match.
At that stage, there was still no clue who would walk away with the trophy.
The match flipped in a matter of minutes
The third set brought the real shift. At 3-3, Alexander Zverev created his only break point of the entire final. The German looked set for the opening he needed to take control, but Sinner escaped with a perfectly judged drop shot.
On that same point, Zverev slipped behind his baseline and briefly held his right knee. He was able to continue, but his timing started to drift.
Moments later, Sinner landed the first break of the match. The Italian backed it up straight away to take the third set, while his opponent began to show clear signs of frustration.
The momentum had plainly changed hands.

Sinner finishes the job
The fourth set only confirmed it. More relaxed, sharper in his choices, Sinner kept dictating from the baseline. Once again, he broke Zverev’s serve before closing it out calmly on his own delivery.
At match point, the Italian dropped onto his back in the middle of Centre Court, soaking up a win that will mean plenty in his season.
At 24, he already has five Grand Slam titles and has kept his London crown. After a 2025 campaign that brought a final loss in Paris before Wimbledon glory, then an early exit at Roland-Garros this season, Sinner has shown a rare trait: he bounces back fast.
Alexander Zverev leaves London beaten, but not broken. The Roland-Garros champion showed he can go toe to toe with the world No 1 deep into the grass season. Thanks to this run, he will also climb back to No 2 in the world.
At the All England Club, the last word again belonged to Jannik Sinner. It may not have been his flashiest tennis of the fortnight, but he waited for the moment the final opened up and then got the job done. That is often how the great ones write their story.
