Cycling: Wiebes storms to the yellow jersey with Lausanne stage win

Wiebes wins the dash in Lausanne

The breakaway had six minutes at one point. By the finish it meant nothing. Lorena Wiebes surged clear in the Lausanne sprint to take the opening stage of the Tour de France Femmes and pull on the first yellow jersey of the race. Kim Le Court of Mauritius came second, European champion Demi Vollering third.

The stage ran 138 kilometres in a loop around Lausanne, tracing the shore of Lake Geneva before the bunch swallowed the early move and set up the sprint.

Vollering banks seconds early

Vollering was not just sprinting for a podium spot. She snatched four bonus seconds on the line, nudging herself ahead of the last two champions, Pauline Ferrand-Prévot and Kasia Niewiadoma, who rolled in eighth and ninth on the same time as Wiebes.

Those four riders up the road had built a lead of six minutes before the peloton hauled them back with six kilometres left. Tidy math, cruel timing.

Geneva next

This is win number 10 at the Tour for Wiebes and the 132nd of a career that keeps stacking them up. Stage two stays inside Switzerland, Aigle to Geneva across 147.9 rolling kilometres. That profile has enough lumps in it to start rearranging the general classification before the first week is out.
