Vancouver lock in their draft-day bet
Tate Johnson will be a Whitecap until at least 2030. Vancouver confirmed on Friday that the defender has signed an extension running through the 2029-30 MLS season, with a club option for 2030-31 on top of it. Financial terms stayed private.
The timing is what stands out. Johnson is 21 and midway through his second professional season, the point at which most MLS clubs prefer to wait another year before handing out long-term security. Vancouver moved early instead, and they moved for five seasons rather than two.
Extensions of that length for a player still in his first contract cycle are not routine in MLS, where roster mechanics and allocation money usually push clubs toward shorter commitments. The Whitecaps have chosen the opposite path with a defender they drafted 18 months ago.

The case for the extension
Johnson has started 17 of his 18 appearances this season and contributed three assists from the back line. Across his career with Vancouver he has 47 MLS appearances, 37 of them starts, with one goal and five assists since the club took him 15th overall in the 2025 SuperDraft.
That start rate matters more than the raw production. Draft picks selected outside the opening handful of slots often spend two seasons circling a first team before they break in. Johnson was in the XI almost immediately and has stayed there.
“Tate is another young player who has made significant strides since joining us at the start of the 2025 season,” sporting director Axel Schuster said. “After being selected in the SuperDraft, he quickly showed his ability to make an impact at a high level within our group. We’re excited to continue supporting Tate’s development and are pleased that he has committed to the club for the long term.”
A player in no rush to leave
“I’m excited to extend my contract with the club,” Johnson said. “I’ve really enjoyed my time in Vancouver. We have an amazing group here, with great teammates, staff, and supporters. It’s been a successful start, and I’m really excited about the future and working to bring more success to the club and city.”
Vancouver now carry a homegrown-style asset on a controlled deal through the back half of the decade, which gives them room to sell later or build around him. Either way, the club has removed the question from its own to-do list for several years.
