Seven minutes in, and the London Stadium went quiet
Sonny Carey launched a long throw into the West Ham box. Lloyd Jones chested it down and hooked an overhead finish past Mads Hermansen. Charlton’s captain had the visitors ahead inside seven minutes, and West Ham spent the rest of the afternoon chasing a game they were expected to control.
Charlton won 2-1 at the London Stadium today, a second win from two Championship matches. West Ham are still waiting for their first.
Miles Leaburn rattled the crossbar on 19 minutes after Tyreece Campbell robbed Kyle Walker-Peters. Carey passed up another opening before the break. Taty Castellanos met an Ollie Scarles cross with a first-time header in first-half stoppage time, straight at Arthur Okonkwo. The goalkeeper had joined on a season-long loan from Wrexham on Thursday and went straight into the side.

Piroe set up a finish West Ham could not close
Konstantinos Mavropanos lost the ball under pressure from Leaburn on 56 minutes. Campbell took it, opened his body and rolled a finish across Hermansen into the bottom right corner.
Joel Piroe, on loan from Leeds and making his West Ham debut, pulled one back on 74 minutes after Okonkwo parried a Castellanos shot. Okonkwo then tipped a Divine Mukasa effort over the bar. Mukasa arrived on loan from Manchester City earlier this week.
Referee Andrew Kitchen awarded West Ham a stoppage-time penalty for handball against Conor Coventry. Castellanos hit the base of the right post.

“We started badly again,” Nuno Espirito Santo said afterwards. “We got punished from a situation where we know Charlton create problems. It became much harder but we still created a lot of situations but were not accurate enough in the boxes.”
West Ham came into the season as promotion favourites and handed debuts to Piroe and Arne Engels. Two matches in, they have not won, and the pressure on their manager arrived early.
Charlton have taken maximum points from both. Nathan Jones was asked whether he wants more goals from his captain. “Do we demand from Lloyd Jones to score more goals? Yeah, because in both boxes he is one of, if not the best, for first contacts in the Championship.”
The league had not staged this London derby for close to two decades. Charlton will not mind waiting a while for the next one.
