Two quarterbacks, no decision
Vanderbilt used two quarterbacks in its season-opening win over Austin Peay. The Commodores (1-0) are expected to roll with the same plan on Saturday against Delaware.
Blaze Berlowitz made the first start of his career. The graduate student completed 11 of 16 passes for 149 yards in the 28-9 win. He also ran the ball 11 times for 45 yards and a touchdown.
Jared Curtis took over from there. The freshman, a five-star local recruit, flipped his commitment from Georgia late in the recruiting cycle. He completed 7 of 9 passes for 60 yards and ran for 22 yards on three carries.
Clark Lea hasn’t made his call. “Right now, it’s still about finding the best formula to win on Saturday, but also about becoming the best team we can be. There’s no handbook for that,” the coach said Tuesday. “I’m just trying to get a big enough sample to see what each guy brings to the table.”
And down the line? “I’m still not settled, so I want to build out a slightly bigger sample.”

Delaware knows its man
No uncertainty on the other side. Nick Minicucci finished as Conference USA’s top passer last season with 3,683 yards. He also led the conference in total offense with 3,918 yards and piled up 33 touchdowns, including 23 through the air and 10 on the ground.
In the opener, he completed 20 of 36 passes for 330 yards and two touchdowns. Delaware (1-0) beat Merrimack 42-7 last Thursday. Minicucci also added a 12-yard scoring run.
Ten different receivers caught at least one pass in that game. Sean Wilson led the way with six catches for 73 yards and a touchdown.
Protect the quarterback
Vanderbilt recorded five sacks against Austin Peay. The program is also riding an eight-game home winning streak, a run that began early last season.
Ryan Carty has made his priority clear. “Protecting the quarterback is the cornerstone of what we have to do to win football games,” the Delaware coach said.
He is mainly waiting to see how his team responds. “There will be moments when Vanderbilt’s talent shows up. How we react in those moments will decide the game.”
