WNBA: Clark, Bueckers headline USA World Cup roster

Clark and Bueckers get the call

Caitlin Clark and Paige Bueckers are headed to the senior stage. USA Basketball named its 12-player women’s national team on Thursday, and both stars will make their major international debuts at next month’s FIBA World Cup in Germany.

They are not the only first-timers. Angel Reese and Aliyah Boston also make their opening World Cup rosters, slotting in beside proven names like A’ja Wilson and Breanna Stewart. Napheesa Collier, Chelsea Gray, Kelsey Plum, Jackie Young, Kahleah Copper and Rhyne Howard round out a group chasing a fifth straight World Cup gold and a 12th overall.

Young team, familiar target

Coach Kara Lawson called it a long process to trim the pool down to 12. Managing director Sue Bird assembled the roster and pointed it straight at Berlin. Seven of the players are under 30, four of them just 24, with Gray the elder statesman at 33.

The tournament runs Sept. 4-13, and the WNBA pauses from Aug. 31 to Sept. 16 to clear the way. The United States opens against China on Sept. 4, then meets Italy on Sept. 6 and the Czech Republic on Sept. 7 before the knockout rounds.
