A hamstring, and a quarterback room that suddenly looks thin
UCF will be without Alonza Barnett III for multiple weeks. ESPN reported the hamstring injury on Monday, roughly a day and a half after the quarterback pulled up late in the Knights’ 12-7 loss at Pitt.
The timing carries more weight than the diagnosis. Barnett arrived in Orlando from James Madison as the answer to a question UCF had been asking for two seasons, and the sample he produced before Saturday was small but clean: 31 completions on 49 attempts for 344 yards, two touchdowns and one interception across two games, plus 22 rushing yards and a score.
Twelve points in Pittsburgh already showed what happens when that arm stops working. UCF sit at 1-1.

What the transfer was supposed to bring
The record explains why the move registered nationally. Barnett was Sun Belt Player of the Year last season at James Madison, and across his final two years with the Dukes he completed 59.2 percent of his passes for 5,404 yards with 49 touchdowns against 12 interceptions in 26 games. A four-to-one ratio is the kind of number that usually survives a jump in competition.
Keyone Jenkins inherits the job. His body of work this season runs to four attempts, all completed, for 42 yards and a touchdown in mop-up duty during the 73-6 opening win over Bethune-Cookman. Useful, and almost entirely uninformative.
The schedule does not wait
UCF host Georgia State on Saturday in Orlando, then open Big 12 play at home against TCU on Sept. 26. Barnett’s availability for that second game will decide whether this month reads as a stumble or a hole.
There is one narrow consolation in the calendar. Multiple weeks in September is a very different sentence from multiple weeks in November, and the Georgia State game hands Jenkins a live audition before the schedule turns serious.
