Blow to the line
Washington is holding its breath. Laremy Tunsil, the Commanders’ star left tackle, went under the knife to repair a torn triceps. Lose that man and you lose the one job you cannot afford to lose: the blindside protector standing between a pass rusher and your quarterback’s back.
Dan Quinn tried to keep the mood light on Monday. The head coach still expects Tunsil on the field at some point this season, though nobody has put a date on the comeback yet.

A hole they cannot easily fill
This is not some interchangeable lineman. Tunsil ranks among the very best left tackles in football, a genuine cornerstone, and now he is gone right as the schedule fires back up. The timing could hardly be crueler.
So the line gets reshuffled. Whoever slots in inherits a job that quietly decides seasons, snap after snap, hit after hit. Washington built plenty of its plan around keeping its quarterback vertical. That plan just took a serious dent.
