Five walks, six earned runs, no sixth inning
Clay Holmes never found it. Five walks, six earned runs, and he was gone before the sixth was over, which is not the line the Cubs needed at Great American Ball Park on Friday night.
The knockout came off the bat of Jose Trevino. Bases loaded, sixth inning, a line drive into right. Two in. 6-4 Reds, and 31,678 people got loud.

Chicago actually led this one
For a while it looked like a different game. Cincinnati jumped out 2-0 in the first before Ian Happ answered with a 366-foot shot in the third, and the Reds immediately took the lead back on a run-scoring double play.
Seiya Suzuki singled a run home in the fourth. That put the Cubs up 4-3.
Then the sixth. Eugenio Suarez brought De La Cruz in to level it, and Trevino handled the rest.
Chicago stranded nine. Cincinnati stranded five. Games turn on smaller margins than that.
Second place, and Milwaukee out of sight
The Cubs sit second in the NL Central at 85-69. Milwaukee are 96-58, eleven clear, and that lead is not shrinking with this much season gone.
Cincinnati are 72-82 and playing for nothing but the pleasure of ruining someone’s night at home, which they did.
Aguiar took the win, his first of the year. Pagan closed it out for save number 24.
Saturday brings Chase Burns to the mound for the Reds, 15-3 with a 2.86 ERA. Chicago will need a better first six innings than that.
