Transfer talk: Roma make the first move for Greenwood, but Marseille knock back 40 million

Transfer battle: Roma bid 40 million for Greenwood, but Marseille want 50

Talks are now under way between Marseille and AS Roma over Mason Greenwood’s transfer. According to Gazzetta dello Sport, the Rome club are preparing an opening bid worth 40 million euros, with add-ons tied to the player’s performances. That is well short of Marseille’s valuation: OM want at least 50 million euros, plus add-ons, before they will even consider letting the former Manchester United forward go. The gap is sizeable, and this one has started a long way apart.

To try to close that gap without increasing the cash offer, Roma are considering including a player in the deal, which would give Marseille a boost without forcing them to spend extra money. No name has yet emerged for who that player might be. On the football side, Gian Piero Gasperini has spoken directly with Greenwood and wants to bring him in. Roma will be in the Champions League next season, a major selling point for a player who is currently operating in a messy situation in Marseille.

Greenwood caught in the middle, with Manchester United still in the mix

The wages are another sticking point. Roma are offering Greenwood a contract worth 4.5 million euros a season, which is less than he is currently earning in Marseille once bonuses and amortisation are taken into account. The Englishman would therefore have to take a pay cut to move to the Italian capital, which only makes an already awkward deal that bit harder.

Manchester United also have to be factored in. The English club will receive at least 40% of the total transfer fee, which automatically trims the wiggle room for everyone involved. Marseille need to bring in enough money for the move to make financial sense after handing United their share. This opening Roma offer, as it stands, is unlikely to satisfy either Marseille or the player. But that’s how transfer windows begin.
