Real Madrid land Ibrahima Konate in another shrewd free transfer move
Real Madrid have kept on working the market without paying a fee, and this time it is Ibrahima Konate who heads to the Spanish capital. The French defender arrives on a free from Liverpool, with his contract up, and has signed through to 2030.
The deal was made official on Thursday. Hardly a shock on the timing, but it had dragged on for weeks. Konate had still been talked about as close to a new deal in England only recently. In the end, he chose Madrid.
A target built for a back line that needed fixing
Madrid have not tried to hide the fact their defence needed fresh legs. Last season left its mark, with the back line looking exposed at times, especially in high-intensity games. Konate comes in under those conditions, and without a transfer fee. That matters for a Real side that keeps running its squad with a brutally cold eye on the finances. He joins an already crowded group in the middle of defence, where minutes will not come easy.
The coaching staff in Madrid also like his profile: power, strength in the air, and the ability to win battles. Not a squad filler. More a player who looks set to get involved quickly in the rotation.

A proven career across France, Germany and England
Developed at Sochaux, Konate left Ligue 1 early to join Leipzig. That is where he made his name at top European level before moving to Liverpool in 2021. In England, he made 183 appearances for the Reds. He also lifted the Premier League title in 2025, the high point of his time at Anfield. Last season was a little more uneven, but it did not knock his standing.
At 27, he arrives in what is often seen as the key stage for a centre-back. Madrid are banking on that, quietly but with a clear plan: strengthen without overpaying. Ibrahima Konate is currently at the 2026 World Cup with France and is chasing a third trophy for Les Bleus.
