Transfer news: Robertson leaves Liverpool and signs for Tottenham in major shock
Nobody saw this coming. Andy Robertson, out of contract after nine years at Liverpool, is set to join Tottenham. The north London club confirmed the move on Friday, saying the Scotland international will link up with Roberto De Zerbi’s squad from July 1. Robertson had already said he would leave the Reds at the end of the season, but gave no hint about where he was heading next. Spurs have pinched him quietly and without much fuss.
For Spurs, this is an urgent fix. The 2025-2026 season was a defensive nightmare: Tottenham finished 17th in the Premier League, shipped 57 goals and posted the fourth-worst defence in the division. Robertson, despite being 31, brings experience and a level of quality this London side cannot afford to ignore. Roberto De Zerbi made no attempt to hide his excitement. “Andy is someone I’ve admired for many years and will bring exceptional technical quality, experience and leadership to our team,” the Italian coach said.

A Liverpool icon closes the book
Robertson spent nine seasons at Liverpool, winning the Premier League, the Champions League and the Club World Cup with the Reds. That is some haul for a player who established himself as one of Europe’s best left-backs over several years. His departure brings down the curtain on an era on the Mersey, after Mohamed Salah and several other senior figures from the Klopp generation also moved on.
The length of Robertson’s contract at Tottenham has not been disclosed. He does not appear in the club’s announcement video either, as he remains officially tied to Liverpool until the end of June. Come July 1, he’ll be in Tottenham white, at a club hoping this signing is the first step in a serious rebuild after a season they’d rather forget.
