Transfer battle: Barca step up push for Anthony Gordon as Liverpool and Bayern circle
Barcelona have cranked up their pursuit of Anthony Gordon. According to Mundo Deportivo, the Catalan club are making serious moves to sign the Newcastle winger, 25, with the England international said to have already made clear he prefers the Barca project over Bayern Munich and Liverpool. That is a strong hint in a deal that looks anything but straightforward.
Deco’s recent trip to London was not just about talks over Chelsea striker Joao Pedro. The Barca sporting chief, along with Bojan Krkic and Joao Amaral, also used the visit to meet Gordon’s camp and start nudging things towards the blue and red side. The result? The England forward, born in Liverpool, is now said to be dreaming of playing at Spotify Camp Nou. And in a market this crowded, a player’s own desire often ends up doing the heavy lifting.
Liverpool have tried to muscle in on the deal over the last few days, driven by the need to rebuild their attack after Mohamed Salah’s departure. Bayern Munich were also keen, to the point that Newcastle set a valuation of between 85 and 90 million euros when the Bavarians came calling. Barcelona have no intention of going that high. Instead, they are hoping Gordon himself will help make it happen by lowering his wage demands to join the club he has set his heart on.

A profile that ticks plenty of boxes for Flick
Barcelona are pushing so hard for Gordon because his profile fits several needs identified by Hansi Flick. The England man can operate on the left wing or through the middle, two areas Barca want to strengthen. This season in the Premier League, he has played 26 matches as a left winger and 16 as a centre-forward. That kind of flexibility is rare, and it makes him a useful fit for a side that still needs options.
The numbers back him up. Across the 2025-2026 season, Gordon has 17 goals and 5 assists in 46 appearances in all competitions, including 10 strikes in the Champions League. His standout display came with a four-goal haul against Qarabag in the group stage. Under contract at Newcastle until 2030, he will not be easy to prise away, but his desire to join Barca changes the picture.
The Catalan club want to wrap this one up quickly and are prepared to offer a five-year deal. With Gordon in the squad, Barcelona would land a major attacking boost to help offset Robert Lewandowski’s exit, while still keeping the search alive for a proper number nine. Julian Alvarez, Joao Pedro and Harry Kane are all still on the radar, but bringing in Gordon would ease the pressure and give Barca some room to breathe in the market.
