A repeat of the final, three months on
On June 27, Stade Toulousain beat Montpellier 28-20 in the Top 14 final. On Sunday, September 27, at 21h05, the two sides meet again at Ernest-Wallon in round four. Nobody missed the symbolism when the schedule dropped.
The table is almost a carbon copy of June’s. Toulouse are second on 10 points, just behind LOU Rugby, the surprise pace-setters early in the season. Montpellier are one point back in fifth, buoyed by four wins in five away games. Both clubs come in on two wins in a row, and this one closes out the whole weekend: the other six matches were played the day before, on Saturday.
The recent record points clearly one way. Toulouse have won four of their last five meetings with Montpellier, with some heavy home wins along the way. Montpellier, for their part, tend to do their best work on the road in tight games, a style that stands in sharp contrast to Toulouse’s.
