One two-way slot, two different bigs
The Minnesota Timberwolves are releasing two-way forward Enrique Freeman and replacing him with Norchad Omier, according to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, who reported the move this afternoon.
Freeman is dealing with an injury described as minor but expected to keep him out for several weeks. That is a long stretch for a club that needs bodies at the end of the roster, split between the NBA team and its G League affiliate in Iowa. Last season Freeman averaged 16.5 points on 54.2 percent shooting, 8.7 rebounds and 2.4 assists for Iowa.

What Omier brings
Omier’s numbers in the minors last year were even louder. He put up 18.3 points and 11.4 rebounds a game with 2.5 assists, on 59.2 percent shooting. The Nicaraguan big man played his college ball at Miami and is built as a compact, physical rebounder.
That profile suits the way teams use these slots. A two-way player can only spend a limited number of days with the NBA club, so the spot is usually kept for a specialist who can fill a hole during a crowded stretch of games.
If Minnesota’s frontcourt rotation thins out, Omier is the name to watch. Until then, the move says more about injury management at the edge of the roster than about the starting five.
