MLS: Timbers beat Dynamo 3-1 and chase a playoff spot

Janssen sets up two, scores the third

Vincent Janssen touched all three Portland goals. He crossed for David Da Costa, who opened the scoring in the 25th minute, then set up Kristoffer Velde for the second in the 65th. In the 78th he headed in a Da Costa corner himself.

Austin Bouzat pulled one back for Houston in the 71st, fed by Duncan McGuire, but the Dynamo never got closer. Portland outshot them 17-9 and led 6-1 in shots on target.

A shaky night for Houston

The Dynamo lost goalkeeper Jonathan Bond after warmups. Blake Gillingham made three saves in his first start for the club. Leading scorer Guilherme and Hector Herrera did not play.

Decision Day is next

Portland (12-14-7, 43 points) moved into eighth in the West, level with Colorado and Seattle. It has won three in a row and scored nine goals in that run. A win at Austin FC next Saturday would clinch a playoff spot. Houston (14-10-9, 51 points) slipped to fifth but had already secured its place in the postseason.
