The cheapest signing is the one that matters
Manchester United rebuilt one part of the pitch this summer and spent close to £200 million doing it, by Opta’s count. Central midfield. Casemiro left, Youri Tielemans, Andrey Santos and Carlos Baleba arrived, and the smallest fee of the three is already looking like the shrewdest piece of business.
Tielemans is the only one of those three to have started both Premier League games so far. Opta’s Matchday 2 review, published this morning, picks him out as the arrival most likely to change what United can ask of Bruno Fernandes.
The reasoning behind all that spending was never complicated. Fill the double pivot so Fernandes never has to sit in it again. Push him higher up the pitch. Let him do the one thing nobody in the division does better.

Sunday made the case
Fernandes scored a hat-trick against Ipswich on Sunday, one of them from the penalty spot, in a 5-2 win that finally gave United three points this season. He operated further forward than he managed for long stretches of last term, and the passing data explains why it clicked.
He received more passes from Tielemans (nine) than from any other teammate. Tielemans, in turn, found Fernandes more often than he found anyone else on the pitch. Two players, one channel, one very clear instruction.
That link matters because of what Fernandes produced in 2025-26. Twenty-one assists, a Premier League record for a single season. Nobody can reasonably ask him to improve on that. The number with room in it is the other one: five non-penalty goals.
Where the ceiling really sits
Five is a thin return for a player who spent much of last season dropping deep to start attacks rather than arriving to finish them. Take that job away and the figure should climb. Sunday was the first loud piece of evidence.
United still have to show it holds against opponents sharper than Ipswich, who conceded five in a game they briefly threatened to make awkward. Tielemans has never been a high-volume ball carrier either, so his value here is positional rather than explosive. He gets United up the pitch by finding the right man, not by running past people.
Fernandes does not need reinventing. He needs a midfield built so that he can stay in the areas where he hurts teams. For roughly the cheapest price United paid all summer, he may finally have one.
