Texas A&M lose Terry Bussey for the season

No contact, no warning

Nobody touched him. Terry Bussey took the opening kickoff on Saturday, slipped, and went down. Trainers came out to him. A cart took him off. Texas A&M lost 31-21 to Kentucky, and on Monday the Aggies confirmed the worst reading of that moment: a lower-body injury that ends his season.

What the Aggies lose

Bussey had seven receptions for 92 yards before Saturday, second on the team in receiving yards behind Isaiah Horton. He also worked on the kickoff and punt return units, which is exactly where the injury found him.

Two weeks ago he was the offensive player of the week in College Station. Four catches, 58 yards, in a 48-20 win over Arizona State. Mike Elko talked about him afterwards like a piece the staff was still learning how to use.

“I think he continues to grow and develop into his role,” Elko said at the time, “and I think we’re trying to continue to find different ways to feature him and get him the ball more often.”

Those ways will have to wait until next year.

Straight into LSU

The timing is brutal. No. 23 Texas A&M sit at 2-1 after the Kentucky defeat and travel to No. 10 LSU on Saturday. Both teams opened Southeastern Conference play with a loss. Both need this one.

A&M go to Baton Rouge with one fewer returner, one fewer receiver, and a depth chart that just thinned out in the two phases where games tend to swing.
