Four more seasons for a 21-year-old
The Vancouver Whitecaps have locked down one of their young players. Defender Tate Johnson signed an extension on Friday that runs through the end of the 2029-30 MLS season. The club also holds an option for 2030-31.
The fee was not disclosed. The length says plenty on its own.

Fifteenth overall, and already a starter
Johnson arrived in Vancouver through the draft. The Whitecaps took him 15th overall in the 2025 MLS SuperDraft. Eighteen months later, he is firmly in the first-team picture.
His numbers this season: three assists in 18 matches, 17 of them starts. Across his MLS career, one goal and five assists in 47 regular-season appearances, with 37 starts. A strong return for a mid-first-round pick whose minutes are climbing fast.
Vancouver back their draft board
“Tate is another young player who has made huge strides since arriving at the start of the 2025 season,” said Whitecaps sporting director Axel Schuster. He pointed to how quickly the defender settled at this level after being drafted.
Johnson talked up the environment around him. “I am delighted to extend with the club. I’ve really enjoyed my time in Vancouver. We have a fantastic group here, with great teammates, staff and supporters,” he said. The Whitecaps have secured a first-choice player on a modest number through the end of the decade.
