Tarleton State beat Bowling Green 20-13 in college football Week 1

NCAA: Tarleton State stun Bowling Green behind Hines

Hines runs through the Falcons

Tarleton State took the first FCS scalp of the 2026 college football season today, beating Bowling Green 20-13. Tylan Hines carried the offense with 250 rushing yards. Two of his biggest runs, 83 and 72 yards, produced no points at all.

The Texans led 10-0 midway through the second quarter and pushed it to 17-0 on a seven-yard touchdown pass from Kaden Anderson to Marquis Willis. That score capped a 99-yard drive that took six plays, and Hines opened it with the 72-yard burst. Anderson finished with 206 passing yards and two touchdowns. Tarleton out-gained the Falcons 464 yards to 386.

Fourth-and-one at the eight

Bowling Green cut into the deficit and drove late in the fourth quarter for the touchdown that would have tied the game or won it. They reached the eight-yard line and went for it on fourth-and-one. Roddrick Roberts and Jadan Aubert met Austyn Dendy in the hole and stopped him short.

Hines then broke off 83 yards on the very next snap from scrimmage, flipping the field and taking most of the clock with him. Tarleton closed the game out from there.

Twice in two years

This is the second straight season Tarleton State have knocked over an FBS program. Last year they travelled to Army and won 30-27 in double overtime. A Division I FCS program beating a Mid-American Conference side in Ohio is no longer a novelty for these Texans, and the number that stands out is 464 yards of offense on the road in a season opener.

Bowling Green now carry a Week 1 home loss to an FCS opponent into their conference schedule. Tarleton head back to Stephenville with a result that will follow them all year.
