Sixty-six minutes, job done

Iga Swiatek barely broke stride in Toronto. The seventh seed dismissed Switzerland’s Viktorija Golubic 6-2, 6-1 on Thursday, needing just 66 minutes to move into the round of 16 at the National Bank Open.

The Pole won 22 of her 28 first-serve points and struck two aces. “It was a good day, and I’m really happy with the way I played,” Swiatek said. She read Golubic’s slice cleanly and controlled the rhythm from the back of the court.

An old ghost put to rest

Golubic holds a curious piece of history against Swiatek. She beat her in the first round of Wimbledon in 2019, when Swiatek was 18, and remains the only player to bounce her in the opening round of a major. That counted for nothing on Thursday. Swiatek has now won three straight meetings and dropped only five games across the last two.

A stiffer test waits in the round of 16. Swiatek will face either 10th seed Marta Kostyuk or 19th seed Madison Keys for a place in the quarterfinals.
