Sunderland have sent their bid to Marseille
Last Friday, against Strasbourg, Igor Paixao may already have played his last game in a Marseille shirt. Sunderland have lodged an offer with Olympique de Marseille for the Brazilian winger, Sky Sports reported on Wednesday. Talks are open.
Paixao, 26, sits among the biggest earners in the squad. That makes him precisely the profile Marseille’s hierarchy want off the books, with the DNCG and UEFA both pushing the club to bring the wage bill down. The numbers point to the exit.
The football case runs the other way. Bruno Genesio rates him. The sporting department would far rather cash in on Kondogbia, Balerdi or Hojbjerg, and this is not a squad overflowing with players who can beat a full-back and change a game on their own. Marseille look likely to sell regardless.

Six out already, and the window has not shut
Marseille’s summer has turned into a clear-out. Greenwood, Aubameyang, Traore, Medina, Rulli, Nadir. The departure list grows most weeks, and Paixao would be the biggest name on it.
He never asked to go. Staying on the Mediterranean was his preference. The closing days of the window may settle that for him.
Sunderland are working more than one file. The English club have also opened talks with Sporting CP over Mozambique winger Geny Catamo. Paixao, though, is the priority.
Le Bris has days, not weeks
Regis Le Bris took Sunderland to seventh in the Premier League last season, one of the campaign’s genuine surprises. The French coach wants a winger before deadline day, and his board has decided to swing.
The fee is the sticking point. No figure has surfaced, and neither club has much runway left.
