A Castilla scorer heads to Alsace
RC Strasbourg confirmed the arrival of Jacobo Ortega on Monday. The 20-year-old Spanish striker leaves Real Madrid, where he had been playing for Castilla, the club’s reserve side.
“Racing Club de Strasbourg Alsace are delighted to announce the arrival of Jacobo Ortega. The Spanish forward has signed for Racing until 2031,” the club said in a statement.
Five years for a 20-year-old tells you plenty about the gamble. Ortega scored 18 goals last season for Castilla, a tally that made him stand out in a reserve side where competition is relentless and first-team chances are close to nil.

Racing keep going young
The move fits the path Strasbourg have followed for several seasons. The club target players under 23 with strong resale value, even if it means giving them time to settle. Ortega fits the brief.
The football picture is less encouraging. Racing’s summer has been messy, with several defeats already on the board. They did at least beat Newcastle on penalties on Saturday, their final test before the season starts.
Next stop: the Velodrome on Friday
Strasbourg open their season in Marseille on Friday night, with kick-off at 20:45. It is hardly a gentle warm-up for a side still under construction and still active in the market.
How long Ortega takes to make an impact is the next question. Moving from Primera Federacion to Ligue 1 is no small step, and Racing need points fast.
