A homecoming behind the bench
Peter DeBoer coached the Dallas Stars for three seasons, from 2022 to 2025, and took them to the Western Conference final each time. On Sunday he walks back into the building with the New York Islanders (5-3-2), who have collected points in five straight games (3-0-2).
The Stars are 6-3-1 and have won four in a row. They opened a season-high six-game homestand on Tuesday with two 3-2 overtime wins, each needing a third-period rally.

Dallas finds its scorers
Mikko Rantanen had a hat trick against Boston on Tuesday, then added two assists two nights later. Thursday’s win over Winnipeg turned on Roope Hintz, who tied the game late in regulation and scored on a breakaway 3:47 into overtime. Wyatt Johnston got his first goal of the season in that game, a useful sign for a player who put up a career-high 45 points in 2025-26.
In goal, Jake Oettinger has allowed two or fewer in seven of his eight starts, and coach Glen Gulutzan calls him the team’s foundation.
What the Islanders bring
New York lost 3-2 in overtime to the Kings on Thursday despite a 32-15 shot edge through two periods. Matthew Schaefer, 19, scored his 24th career goal, tying Bobby Orr for the second-most by a teenage defenseman. Phil Housley leads with 46. Victor Eklund, 20, scored for a second straight game, and the penalty kill has stopped all 11 short-handed chances over the last four games.
